I'm not a real gore fan, although sometimes it has it's place. The falling apart of bodies fits in a zombie film, the rending of flesh in a werewolf film, the sucking of blood and draining of life in a vampire film. I was very resistant to seeing Saw until finally convinced, and it's a much better film than I thought it would be. It wasn't really gory, but much more psychological.

Now, I haven't seen Saw 2 or Saw 3, and I've heard that these follow up mostly on the gorier side of things rather than on the psychological side, which is disappointing. I avoid Texas Chainsaw Massacre for that reason as well.

I did challenge myself and saw Hostel, but aside from a few relatively gory shots, the movie was kinda boring. It wasn't as gory as I expected, but it also had only the "horror that humanity does" as its angle, and I'm more interested in the supernatural stuff. It's the same reason I haven't seen Silence of the Lambs or The Godfather -- why bother? I have many more films to watch than these, even if they have such good quality.

I guess I'll never be a pure film snob; I don't watch movies because they appeal to some sort of arbitrary quality standard for any film. I watch films because they appeal to me, and that includes some rather cheesy fare as well as some quite terrible movies.

Ok, catharsis over! :)
