The crying reaction seems to ba a common bit of fan fail. The worst is how a lot of fandoms a GUY will get "aww, poor woobie" if he cries and a girl gets "omg whiny bitch". Ffff. I haven't seen the scene in question, but seeing someone die in front of you is a perfectly good reason to cry in my book >_>.
And I'd let a kid watch Stargate, but yes, it's never been a show for small/easily scared children!
The double standard for crying annoys me to no end. Girls can cry without being weak, people. It's her father who she saw die, which makes it really appropriate for her to cry and then run off to attack the scientist who sent them there.
I would let kids watch it, but it's really not a family show. I mean, SG-1 was originally airing on Showtime.
