You know it's just a big-budget movie about furries, right?

Star Trek just lost in the Visual Effects category to Avatar.

I no longer have any faith in humanity.

wtf

Well, that's depressing. :/ I read an article that said that they expected Star Trek to get snubbed at the Oscars, but they didn't report it in a "YAY!" way. Rather, they were like, "Well, shit."

Not to mention the fact that Avatar has the same basic plot as Pocahontas. Nice.

I'm sorry about not calling last night. The wedding wore me out. If you're not busy Tuesday night, I would love to have a chat!

Yeah, comedies and sci-fi movies almost never get much recognition at the Oscars. :(

Or that they apparently even got away with putting furry-sex in there...

Ah, no problem, I thought that might be the case, and one of my college bffs called me with a case of breakup-devastation, so it's okay. Hopefully I won't be too exhausted Tues night, lol, I'll send you a text after I get home from work and have dinner. <3

That's not all that's wrong with Avatar ... it's also just the latest in a long line of What These People Need Is a Honky movies. (See also TV Tropes' Mighty Whitey.)

It's disappointing that it's getting attention, once again.

Aaarh, the whole premise of the movie just pisses me off (as much as the fact that "the furries" finally got themselves a big-budget, famously-directed, wrong!sex-included! movie <-- hah, vindictive, much? :P)

Ah, well. It's all politics, and hopefully Xpyne will be able to inform me, from a "technical standpoint," why the award is justified so I can lay off the gnashing of my teeth, lol.

dude, from a technical standpoint, avatar was a groundbreaking new form of visual effects. as much as I obsessively love star trek, its amazing effects were simply stellar examples of current technology. and lens flares, for "mood." haha. avatar may be a shitty example of storytelling, but that's not what the award's for. just sayin'. now if you tell me avatar has won anything related to its plot, then I will happily diatribe and ream that movie, which for the record, i still enjoyed seeing in theater (because of the visual effects).

No one asked you, Ms. Technical Standpoint, and I invite you to inform me why I should care over tea soliandxpyne March 8 2010, 04:57:17 UTC
No, no, my main point of contention is that, personally (from what admittedly little of Avatar I have seen, all from commercials and the like), I feel Star Trek's vfx were far superior--mainly due to the fact that, sure, it's a million times easier to get away with "awesome looking" effects when your entire universe is intentionally, high-saturation technicolor-y unrealistic.

Personally, I find the idea of vfx good enough to look like you're actually in mother-effing outer space to be more impressive than fx good enough to look like you're Matrix-style plugged into a super-responsive video game. >:/

Also, 'diatribe' is not a verb, it is a noun.

This has nothing to do with the rants and the validity thereof, but watching the Soliandxpyne acct argue with itself is awesome. It's like a virtual Moebius strip. ;D I can feel space and time bending. You guys rule. :D

I have no opinion either way on ST vs Avatar (except Avatar is an incredibly stupid story), but both looked like eye candy to me. (I know, fence sitters suck. ;D )

Far as movies go, Star Trek was better, but I'm afraid Avatar was the shoe-in for the award, if only because more manhours went into animation. XD

On the bright side, Spock's pointy ears won an Oscar, too!

My biggest disappointment is that Up! didn't get on for original screen play.

I don't know if I'd necessarily agree that more manhours = more deserving of an award, but for all I know, that was a big one of the academy's criteria. I don't really follow the politics of the Oscars, I just watch to see the pretty dresses, and get upset when a movie I don't like gets awards over movies I did like, lol.

And yes! I was glad to see Star Trek win for best makeup, because that was some pretty amazing stuff.

Ah, well, like comedies and sci-fi movies, animated movies are often overlooked, too. :/

(lmao--awesomely appropriate icon, btw)
