Roleplay: Just a Hobby (?)

Mar 10, 2010 08:28

The fact it really shouldn't bother me as much as it does is frustrating. Now I'm finding myself doubting every aspect of how I play.

I'm going back to finishing Dave's frilly prosecutor game. /throws hands up in the air

gaming, roleplay

...dude you're investing way too much into it. It's a game. Roleplaying game. If you're not having fun and you're stressing yourself out over what people are going to think of you for it, maybe you should take a break. :|

It's just the damn application part that stresses me out because I have no clue what they want from me.

...then I'd say it's a fair bet to assume you shouldn't app places. If you're just gonna stress over it, it's not worth it.

I'll second your friend's logic up there. Maybe it's better if they rejected you. Not only you don't have to deal with elitists, cliques, trying to fit in, but saves you a lot of stress, potential wank, drama and your precious time.

There are plenty of other sandboxes out there.

There is nothing wrong with your roleplaying ability, I assure you. Maybe they want nothing from you, but rather, you're not the type of roleplayer they're looking for. *shrugs* Their loss.

It wasn't quite a rejection as a request for an additional sample, but that's almost as bad when I have nothing to work off of. :x

I could understand them being picky if there was a bunch of people vying for the character, but there's hasn't been an Asch there for goodness knows how long or they didn't seem to stay long.

Also agreeing with first comment! Applications are stressful, yes, but don't let them take the fun out of roleplaying. I'd hack the CIA mainframe, find you, and boot you in the face if you ever quit. Just an FYI. B|b If you don't get accepted or anything, don't let it get you down, just move on and find somewhere better. Above comment is right, there are a lot more games out there that aren't as prissy about it or don't accept apps.

Personally, you know how much I love the characters you play, Sol, so don't stress too much.

HE ALSO HAS A TOP HAT. 8D

Fff...It was an inside joke between my friends and I. One of said friends drew it for me and I icon'd it. |D It was just too awesome not to.

THAT HE DOES.

fffff, that's like when I saw the first movie I called Mewtwo PingPong, because the pads of his fingers look like three pingpong balls. :|;;

Although I have to agree that getting too stressed out over applications isn't really good, I admit that I've had the same problem in the past. Especially with sample posts, since I never know what to write... It's difficult when you have to just write 300 words or whatever, and make it be in character, but have nothing to write about. Most people don't seem to have that issue, for some reason, but it's always a problem with me. When I've brought it up before I'm usually told that I probably shouldn't play that character, in that case, or in that RP, but after actually managing to type up something for the samples I'm usually later told that I'm great at the characters, and people love them ( ... )

See, that's the problem I'm currently and always have had: I don't know what to write. It isn't really so much stressful as it is confusing and flat out disappointing because I really wanted to participate in this month's events. >:

If I shouldn't 'play that character' or have to stick to dressing rooms and the like, I almost want to throw in the towel and say "fuck it" because I'm obviously doing something wrong. And unfortunately I think I only have until tomorrow to submit a rewrite of my third-person sample with no idea of what to write. orz

Threadjacking; why not introduce events into Abyss Dressing? :| If you wanted to be part of this month's event at Poly, just bring it to where you play.

And... dude? How many people have commented to this saying it's not your fault? I may not have said as much verbatim, but we're all basically telling you the same thing. Don't let something like this take the fun out of it for you. You can always reply to their request of a rewrite and ask them for some pointers. Say "I'm completely boned on subject material, can you throw the first word at me that comes to mind and I'll work off that?". Most mods will be happy to do that, you just have to be willing to ask.

...uh. idk? I think we asked about it a while ago, but I fail as a leader-person and haven't even gotten around to making my Auldrant-related announcement. \:|/

;~; You're seriously like my big sis who beats me up for being an idiot and then turns around to make me feel better. I've never would've considered doing anything like asking for a prompt-word if I don't see anyone else doing so. I have this ingrained fear of being a fsking oddball that people point at and whisper about. orz

One app isn't indicative of a person's entire RP career. But what I'd like to stress the most is that the problem with samples is they occur in a vacuum, especially if there are no prompts given, and normally, RPing doesn't take place in a vacuum. There's context, setting, and interaction involved in RPing, but one when is told just write something!, and that something has to not only have the character's voice but also their motivations and whatever? It's not exactly the easiest thing to do without knowing what to write about, so don't beat yourself up over it.

YAY. THANK YOU. Finally someone else who understands exactly where I'm coming from. ;; If I wanted to come up with third-person writing with nothing to go on, I'd be writing damn fanfiction, for crying out loud. Which I don't do/suck at for this very reason.
