Oh good, look what Apple's endorsed

Please check the ETAs at the bottom of this post for situation updates! Can you still find the app? Apple may be pulling it. Let me know! Thanks! As you may and may not know, Apple Computer exercises editorial control over the content of the Apple Store, through which music, ebooks, and iPhone and iPad applications are sold. It's been called - ( Read more... )

Not an Apple user (at least not since my iPod died and now I'm having VERY serious second thoughts about replacing it), but definitely signal-boosting.

I don't think you have to be an Apple equipment user to find this appalling and say so. I mean, sure, that's a useful lever to get paid more attention, but still - you're always a potential Apple product owner.

Article is good but there's one issue of erasure in here.

That PeekABooTranny app is transphobic/cissexist and transmisogynistic. Not sexist and homophobic.

By calling it sexism and homophobia, you erase trans people and subsume our concerns into the concerns of the gay community while implicitly claiming we're gay due to that. See the issue? You really ought to correct that sentence.

Sexism is at the root of all of these evils, but I'll gladly add transphobic.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's at the root of it. It certainly is intermingled though, since this app seems to only be targeting trans women.

Generally we merge that sort of thing into transmisogyny, because the combo of sexism and transphobia is an exponentially vicious one

I would, but it's the kind of debate I really don't want to have. I mean, aside from being so beyond screamingly burnt out on activism - c.f. your post of 10 September, which I just found following your URL - there's no constructive reason. I'm pretty sure neither of us are the problem here. In the specific, Apple is; in the general, All This Crap is. So why get doctrinal? I'll probably go write some more angry songs, instead. People seem to like those.

FB apparently doesn't care about offensiveness, not that I've noticed at least.

The number won't talk to you if you're not a journalist; they kick you over to general customer service (which is closed right now). I'll try again tomorrow, probably after thinking up a fictional source to be a journalist from (I'm a student at Antioch; I may say I'm a writer for student media, which I might just be for this purpose if I don't like the answers they give me on the phone call), so they take me seriously.

Yeah, but it kicks you over to a person in the right kind of position, as opposed to all the tech support lines which don't. Thanks, and good luck tomorrow.

They've registered a complaint on my behalf, and are also recommending going to apple.com/feedback, and put in a complaint at the bottom where there's a section for "software". Don't click on "store request," click on "itunes," they say. "Feedback about..." is a pulldown menu; click 'other', and then put in the comment.

I made sure he's got my complaint directly also, along with an explicit statement in the recorded complaint that the remedy I would like would be a public apology in the press and withdrawal of the application in question. But I'll go do the other method also, and wanted to post it here because I figure the more ways to bend their ear about this, the better.
