So they're all dead, and this bunch was pulled into Gene Hunt's orbit? How did he do that? I think that's the part I'm having trouble with.

I don't think Gene even knows how he does it or why it happens, or he's forgotten if he once knew. Something about him made it possible for him to become a way-station for troubled cops. At least that's my interpretation. To be honest, I think he had forgotten what really happened with Sam until Alex brought it all up at the farm house.

Short answer: I have no idea how he did it.

Err...then what did happen to Sam? The last I understood was the Gene helped Sam fake his death. Is that not what happened?

I'm pretty sure we're to take it that Sam (and Annie maybe?) went into the Magical Bar of Heaven Light--like Shaz, Chris, Ray, & Alex did. And then Gene made it look like he died in that car, so yeah, faked his death. But my theory--because Gene really did seem like he had forgotten The Truth and then remembered by the scarecrow/farmhouse--is that he keeps forgetting The Truth. But that last part is more my interpretation.
