...in the realm of statistics where variance is both your friend and the bitch from the wrong side of the tracks at times, central tendency is still the most accepted and widest reported measure of analysis. Now, that tendency can be brought about by equally polarized variance at both end of the distribution, which create a false sense of a centrally balanced point or mean, or it can derive from a true concentration upon the honest mid-point of the entire variance distribution field.
I would argue both have their own truth, but the more complete is the latter of these two; the average that is just that and incorporates the mid-point of the influence of not just the two tails but of all values.
