esoteric question of the day

Nov 05, 2008 12:50

Not sure why I'm in an introspective mood, other than the fact that I've been running on empty for a month now, and tiredness begets strange thoughts, and this rather simple and old debate was brought up, and though I have never believed there is an exclusive answer (meaning I don't think one has to negate the other), I put it forth here ( Read more... )

Seriously? Probably liked. But in general, I find I no longer really care much about other people's opinions of me.

Ummm...hard one. I mean, my gut instinct says respected, but then I have this deep-seated need to be liked as well.

But, I guess if I really think about it, I'm not sure I'd want to be liked without being respected at the same time.

On the other hand, can you respect someone you don't like? I guess it is possible. Most people I respect, I also like...but I don't always respect the people I like.

Yeah, I'm going with respected.

Can't we not have both?

But if there was someone pointing a gun to my head saying "Choose one", I think I'd go with respect. Simply because in the long run, IMO respect would lead to "like" :)

I would love to say respected. I would love even more to say both! But, if I can really only choose one, I would rather be liked. And hope one of the reasons I was liked was because I was respected. (So, agreeing with you that one doesn't negate the other; it's hard to like someone you don't respect, although it's very possible to respect someone you really don't like much).

I hope you get some time to re-charge and soon.

I always end up spamming you. I don't mean to. But, yes, they are not mutually exclusive, and I think sometimes we wrongly associate respect with being a bully.
