They're barn swallows whose mom has been widowed, thanks to our cat, so I'm providing the family with extra food to make up for what the papa bird would have contributed. The full story is here:
Aren't they, though? There's no sign of the discarded eggshells; maybe Mama Bird ate the shells for their calcium. She keeps throwing out the Frosted Flakes that I put in her food cup to feed the worms. XD
I'm trying to suss out what's nesting in a hole in my siding; the yard is decorated with tufts of pink insulation and sometime after the chicks have fledged I'm going to have to hire someone to rebuild the wall, oh, well.
(I've got baby chicks I intended to have, and baby killdeer in the fields. Spring comes and the world makes it's intentions known).
Oh dear, LOL at the birds throwing insulation into your yard! I've got a similar problem with the eaves of my roof -- I want to cover some rotted-out holes in the eaves with metal flashing to keep the squirrels from nesting in my attic, but I'm afraid that I'll pen some squirrels inside if I do. And while I could set live traps out in the attic to catch any walled-in squirrels, I'd be afraid that there might be litters of babies in the attic who'd starve if I captured their mom and prevented her from reentering the house. I'll probably have to wait 'til this winter to cover the holes, and then set traps to capture any squirrels that are using the attic as a hibernation den.
