I would encourage you to speak to people familiar with cat nutrition & natural foods to see if you can find something cheaper/better for him to eat. Vet prescription food is crap, look at the ingredients. You actually CAN buy better food at PetCo. If there are natural pet food stores or nutritionists (vets are not nutritionists) in your area, it might be worth checking out!

Yay!! - glad he is home now.:) Lucky is lucky! I know first hand the stuggle/pain of this vet expense and cat food issue. My boy WILL NOT touch prescription wet food from the vet. He does however enjoy wellness foods- only chicken, turkey and beef are ok. Avoid things with fish as that can aggravated crystal formation. Also, I highly recommend wet food over dry so that he gets plenty of liquid. He is probably going to hate using the litter box because it hurts to pee, but he has to keep clean. Do you "free feed"? Meaning do you leave food out all day? You may need to change your routine with that so that Lucky will eat the proper food.
I also feed Merricks wet food- Grammy's Pot Pie and Turducken flavors. Again, avoid fishy flavors. I used to feed Natural Balance to my boy before the pet food recalls and he was okay on that. Wellness seems to be the best so far and it is a little more reasonable and much healthier than the prescription stuff. Just my experience....
Hope things settle down soon. ((hugs)) & *purrrrrrrrrrrrrrs*

Thanks! I hadn't heard about avoiding fishy flavors. And yes, normally i allow the 3 kitties to graze all day. Not going to work now! The girls are mad because i locked Lucky in the bathroom with his wet food, and they're in the kitchen with their dry. They haven't quite realized that the food won't be out all the time, so they're not eating right now. Not good! haha. I have a feeling i'll be woken up in the middle of the night!

i'm so glad to see you link to this wonderful update. go lucky! and thank goodness for vets that let you pay over time, they can be a real blessing.

did they rx a grain free food for him? (lots of cats are sensitive to gluten and corn and soy, but lots of cats foods use those for bulk. grrrr)

congratulations on your beautiful dopey boy being home safe and sound!

They Rx really expensive urinary tract health food that i can only buy from them, of course. I plan on feeding him this case and then trying out a more commercial UT health food... Preferably natural, but we'll see. I'd like it to be something i can feed all *3* cats so i don't have to seperate them for mealtimes... i much prefer just dumping the food and running haha.

i second all the kitty food comments! specially if it's Science Diet, that's some of the worst pet food on the market.

i've read that cranberry extract can help kitties with urinary/bladder issues. of course, they probably won't want to eat it if they can taste it...

this is a neat site - http://www.naturalrearing.com/coda/index.html
not sure if they're trying to sell something, though, since i haven't looked at the whole thing.

i like this one, too - http://www.nativeremedies.com/petalive/uti-free-urinary-tract-infection-cats-dogs.html

so glad he's back home and you have such a cool vet!!

Thanks! I'll definitely check out those sites. Funny, i take cranberry extract myself when i fear a UTI coming on... Don't know how i'd make HIM take it though. haha.

you'd probably have to mix the powder in with wet food. that's what i'm having to do with the post-surgery meds that my one kitty is taking now...
