But there ARE Korean Johnny Cashs, and they're more popular now than in many years because of the new 'talent' music shows, whether they're Idol-like or about pulling out old legends to compete. And those shows are really changing quite a lot in the Korean industry - because of Superstar K this week's #1 on Gaon is Busker Busker, a typically low-fi unsigned indie band with half-decent voices and some charm (and even a foreigner on drums). There are actually only 2 idol groups in the top 10 (and no OST ballads).

I don't know where LSM is imagining he'll be earning money in Asia outside of Korea and Japan, enough to make it the new center of the worldwide industry. You can earn money by touring China but not by releasing music there. I'm not sure what that was all about, LSM. I think that's just damage control for not breaking the US before and pre-emptively in the future. If he'd just said "we can earn more in Japan with little effort instead of wasting years in the US" he would probably come off as more honest.

That's great news! I wonder -- in the event that bands other genres become more popular, will it eventually break the idol system, as in the US, will it merely restrict the idol system to a smaller niche, as in Japan, or will it coopt and begin training bands and DJs and such? I suppose IU and Younha point the way, but both have had to bow to idol conventions as well.

But "the US" is also kind of a nebulous culture center. Nashville and New York are really only symbolic music centers at this point. Maybe LA, to access multiple media approaches with music, TV, and movies? Similarly, in that the rest of Asia primarily looks to Japan and now Korea to represent their mainstream pop music, "Asia" is somewhat already a culture center. Basically, I think his dream is just that Kpop won't have to be always questing to enter yet another bigger market, because they'll be the biggest market. Too bad language barriers fuck that up, lol.
