And she and Taeyeon looked really alike in some shots o_o! - I think I'm used to cuts every second from fanmade AMVs XDDD - I agree that the MV was storyboarded better - the transitions! That's what was missing! I don't know. I like that they did more with this MV and actually tried to upgrade it, but I don't know if the upgrade was actually necessary. There was this one shot that had Taeyeon in the center grinning while everyone else fluttered around her and I swore it looked like she was welcoming some random male into her harem of blood-thirsty mannequins. I loved Hyo's voice in this version though...but I don't know. It's not really a hit for me and somehow the crab dance seems more awk now.

I think the main thing that really feels off about this PV for me is that SNSD no longer looks the part. In the MV, back in 2009, they really had this young and bubbly vibe of a girl becoming a woman, and that was because of the hair and makeup, clothes, etc. When I watch the PV, they all seem to be already matured women attempting to act cute without that same liveliness. Their hair especially makes them all look much older and more sophisticated -- in the MV, the nine of them had relatively dark, long hair (especially prominent in the T-shirt sleepover scene), whereas in the PV, Jessica and Taeyeon have their bleached brown hair, and their haircuts scream 'woman' more than 'girl' to me

I think you've hit it on the head. It's only been a year and a half, but they've already "aged" in terms of that 'natural progression' you mentioned. And I definitely agree that their styling did not help them recapture the youthfulness of the original MV.
Aside from that, I really hated the new storyline, and the lack of development of it. One of my favorite things about Gee was the beginning with the mannequins, and now they screwed that up with a really anticlimatic "peeking from behind them." EXACTLY! There was honest to goodness *development* in the original, but in the PV, it's one note starry-eyed crushing.

I just realized that it looks like the Japanese PV director stole the girls from the Oh! MV set, shoved them into bright skinny jeans, and threw them onto the Gee MV set. They look so out of place and their hair and clothes are very Oh!-ish.
It does seem like a mess, doesn't it. At first I thought they were like elves, helping at Minho's store (I'd missed the opening and didn't know they were in a separate store from Minho's at first) but then they got to meet him and I was like ... whut?
It does look like they've used the Oh! stylist. I mentioned somewhere that people in SM seem to be deluded that this new style of clothing is the most amazing thing ever. I think they've been sniffing Sica's bleach or something. Plaid is not in! DX!
*snorts* That may be what this is. The "retro" styling, arguably carried over from Oh!, doesn't help that "recycled" feeling.
Both PVs are similar to the original MVs, but not exactly the same. Both changed their storylines and styling (though both PVs insist on having the darn retro styling) but stayed relatively the same. I think the major thing about Genie was the changes in the lyrics. The entire meaning kinda ... shifted. It didn't change completely, but there was a different undercurrent - more mutual, I think you can say. Gee stayed the same (I'm assuming - I've not seen the translation) so maybe it's why it doesn't feel as fresh? Hrm.
Actually what this reminds me of is that single they were gonna do before Gee that got canned - the remake of an old girl group song. There was a leaked photo from it of them wearing similar outfits(I think) to here in this pv.
The thing is I always lack some sort of 'attention to detail' gene, so my first reaction was "oh that's pretty similar, nice enough". You're all very much right about the flaws, but I never would have noticed. Then again, I'm not likely to play this one on repeat like the Korean one because it's the Korean tune I love.
Also it was confirmed that it contains some Korean words to retain that 'exotic' flavour. That's interesting that they capitalize so much on a Korean-as-coolness fad over there.

There were a lot of voices that asked for them to promote with their original Korean songs. We took their suggestions into consideration, and naturally added the Korean lyrics into their Japanese remakes." and "Korean sounds a lot stronger than Japanese, impact-wise, so it’s able to add a bit of charm to the songs."
Huh. So there really was that much of a desire for a Japanese version of Gee and Mister? And yet still capitalizing on the "exotic" that is Korean. Still, kinda take all of this with a grain of salt ... The other view could be that the company banked on a sure thing - let's just do a remake! - and wanted to maintain some bit of "hey this came from Korea" in there in the form of the lyrics.

The Genie PV was pretty different (you know, relatively speaking) so I was surprised that this one was so much a remake of the original.
