Flower Power

EDIT: AHAHAHAHA Yeah, so Rino definitely did not do this one, because I just found out Rino was busy choreographing The Wiz. Yes, that The Wiz production in which the acclaimed director Miyamoto Amon auditioned the lead role of Dorothy for out of the 48fam. (Which gave me some of the best 48fam dance footage evar.) And for more six degrees of Apop ( Read more... )

I have nothing much to add except that I love to see Fairies dance. It's a shame maybe about the vocals though since none of them really stand out. But I like their mini Namie/MAX feel. YES.

I just love how they don't stick to the one style. There's precision heels routines, smooth hip hop swag, crazy-fast locking, hard-hitting crumping?, and all set to a wide variety of music types, as well, from club bangers to oldschool hiphop to disco.
Also, I like how there's the two best dancers, but otherwise there isn't a Dance Line, as they rotate members for the smaller group routines. And the all-group routines aren't hindered by any weak link at all.
It always bothered me that female groups in Kpop are always contrained to "sexy dances," whereas Fairies and now AKB have done the dolphin dance aka Infinite's scorpion dance. I feel like there's less of a gender divide in choreo for Jpop, both in girls doing hard technical choreography that would be "male" in Kpop, and boybands doing sweet bubblegum dances in bright sparkly pink tuxedos. It's one of the reasons why in some ways BoA feels more at home in a Jpop context, whereas she's an exception to female soloist trends in Korea ( ... )

Congrats, you just made me highly interested in Crayon Pop. This might be my favorite Kpop debut since...I dunno, GLAM? XD

I like the song, it's kinda weird and catchy, but the video is the woooorst they've ever done. At least Mr Taxi had actual dancing. I was genuinely asking if this was a piss-take at one point. Was this the first time the girls did the routine? Improv? Here's Jessica actually laughing at the ramshackleness of it all

I wonder how much of their image management is SM vs. UMJ. UMJ not being a management label, I think that SM is still pulling all of the strings conceptually, but I also feel like there's more Japanese input for the non-remake singles.
I wonder this because the flight attendant outfits are a sequel in the fetish-based getups SNSD have been doing for Japan, starting with Mr. Taxi, so there might be indeed some Passpo inspiration going on here, but on ther other hand, a SMEnt looking strictly at western influences probably lifted the idea more from Britney's Toxic.

"One month of practice isn't enough" my ass.

At least you'll get to console yourself with live Perfume dancing.

Could it be that SME has finally reached a point where they've spread themselves too thin at the moment? Truthfully they've had a bulletproof yeah up until now with non-stop comebacks and multiple promotions so I guess it's about time they have to take a bit of a budget break but couldn't afford to NOT have the girls come out with something. Plus, it IS a follow-up song so I guess not much can be expected from it...but at the same time, they did have "The Great Escape" which only had maybe two televised performances and yet had choreo far better than "Flower Power". Weird. At any rate, I do like some of what I saw; I thought i twas interesting how half of them would freeze or stop in motion and the rest would sort of march past them. Otherwise...they've had better days. I'm not sure which let me down visually more; Younique's video or this one. Oh well.

Now to watch all these dance clips!

To be honest, I think SNSD themselves are a bit done with the gig, and it's not just SM. (Although it's clear that whoever did the choreography this time didn't deliver one up to SM standards. What with how UFA have been doing this kind of choreo for years now, I morbidly think that maybe SM got a UFA choreographer for cheap for this one because Jaewon and Rino were busy or something ( ... )

I agree. It's honestly ironic that I see you say this about them sort of being fed up with it, because it alludes to a recent epiphany I've had: I'm tired of seeing SNSD as one. AT THE VERY LEAST for right now. Now, this isn't exactly an ENTIRELY new sentiment considering I (and many others) have been hoping for subgroups for ages now in hopes of Hyoyeon being favored, but now it's to the point where I just think the girls have grown as much as they possibly can as one whole unit. At this point, they just have interests that are taking them in separate directions right now. TTS was FANTASTIC, Hyoyeon & The Boys could be just as good if worked on, Sunny I actually did enjoy for musicals and Jessica...Jessica can go do something not on stage. It's rare that I actually feel this way about a group, and honestly the only other group in K-Pop that I feel this way towards is probably Big Bang, who seem to work better separately than they do as a whole unit ( ... )

Also agree about Big Bang. And hey, they almost broke up before Daesung's accident brought them back together, so it's very likely SNSD are hitting that point now as well. I can't see them breaking up because of the benefits of the group name, but they'll probably just continue to do more solo activities and dial back on group activities, the way Suju have.

Yes, no matter how technically lacking SNSD's dancing now is, they still have gained all of this veteran stage presence and weight. I always love comparing their performances now to their first Gayo Daejun outing, where the dance is arguably harder than Flower Power's, but is still so awkward despite above-par execution. That's why it's also kind of funny to compare Hyo with the EXO boys in Maxstep.

Finally, a girlgroup fully following the BoA aesthetic! (The song is pretty sweet, too, other than the cheesy key change. XD)
