I am suddenly hit with the realization that I gave up on Harry Potter not because Sirius Black died. No, I gave up on reading Harry Potter when Sirius Black died; but what made me turn away from the whole series (as in, a total ceasing of interest in all things related to it), in retrospect, was the Harry/Ginny ship. To be fair, I had not read the ( Read more... )

THIS.

i never say it anymore when i don't like some female characters - my own flist doesn't say anything, but i know many still think i'm just some sort of slash!loving-anti!female fangirl. which i'm not :( (even though i do love to slash pretty boys.) there are just as many male characters i don't like, *g* and tbh i am mostly heterosexual, and i just like guys better (even though women are prettier). it's probably why most of my favorite characters are men.

um... anyway. i'm not saying anything clever - just wanted to say i agree with this, SO MUCH.

ps. but there are a lot of anti!female!slashers who are women - so maybe it's sometimes hard to tell the difference, *shrugs* i don't know.

Fortunately, this LJ has years of history behind it as my venting ground for pissing people off in the Chinese fandom. I doubt I'd mind that much if it comes to that in the English language fandom as well.

Sometimes I think the English language fandom's fault is its tolerance, almost. In the sense of "oh you have to be open-minded and like everything/everybody". But the truth is I don't, and I seriously doubt that I am alone. While I am polite enough not to say that in public space (i.e., comms and random LJs), I'll say whatever I want on my journal. (Imagine talking about why you don't like Sanji from One Piece openly when your friends are Sanji fangirls...)

As for the anti!female!slashers...my position is: I have not met any personally, and I really can't be bothered to give a flying fuck as to their motivation. I'm in a fandom to be entertained, not "educated"—and I say this as somebody coming from a highly politicized background.

(Wow. I guess I'm still mad about this.)

Word to that! I have my likes, I don't push them on anyone, and equally, I don't have to like what everyone else likes.

I've been in Snape/Harry for A VERY LONG TIME, and never once dared stepping out of that ship. I have heard horror stories about how at other fandom if you don't support Ginny/Harry, you get labeled for being anti-female. If you say one bad word about Lily/Snape, you're not respecting canon. You know, being a slash fan since Slam Dunk, I really don't need to feel I have to justify why I like slash more than het. I know why I like slash, and it does not reflect my feelings towards women in any way.

Same goes with Uhura/Spock. I don't think they'd work out NOT because I hate Uhura, but I just don't see the chemistry there.

And don't even get me started on the Chinese fandom, omg.

One of the reasons I went off HP (among many other things) was the fact that Hermione, who was supposed to be a smart, hopefully empowering figure, sees Ron date someone else, so she dates someone she doesn't even like to get back at him. (insert rolls eyes here)

But you know, Rowlings been slammed for making her main protagoinist male (Harry) and not a witch, so you are in good company.

See, I actually don't have a problem with that. To me, it does not detract from the fact that see is an awesome character overall. Sure she did something that was, romantically speaking, stupid. But a part of growing up is making mistakes, and a character does not have to be perfect for me to like him/her. (Another case in point: Sirius Black and his school bully days.) As I liked her from the very beginning, I am quite willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. (Ginny is a whole other game.)

Ginny as a character was never rounded out, just a sort of foil to Harry's doings, you could see Rowling set up the relationship from the second book (Chamber of Secrets) but then she spent more time on a Harry-Cho story than she did on Harry-Ginny, it just felt rushed and shoved in, so it never worked as the 'romance to end all romances'

To me, most of the inventiveness and world developing was in the first two and three books, and then I think the author got tired after book four, that's when she lost me anyway.

Ukes you hate is more or less like those female characters you dislike.Vice versa. And honestly, I think you're more critical when the bottom is a man.
Oh, Ginny, she's not even pretty.

PS: I admit I'm a little bit Garysue.....
PS2: I appreciated some SB+HP no-slash fics.

Uh, yeah, I'm pretty sure Rowling did it just so she could play with the Potter kids later, it doesn't matter who gets to shag Harry. XD
