Is. It's a bit lame that they chose that name, 'cos it's just going to fuck with any plans on bringing *the* Rani back any time soon. Although I'm not sure if I want more Pip'n'Jane scripts, to be honest.
And it's Sanskrit, originally. Her surname is Chandra, which means "moon", so that's another sci-fi joke, I suppose.
I haven't seen the next SJA story yet, but I loved 'The Last Sontaran'. Did Sarah Jane make any remark about the name, even in an aside?
Chandra's a pretty common name--there are 137 listed in the Auckland phone book, but yes, I'd say it's an SF joke. Queen of the moon, huh? Mind you, I called an OC Marama Ranginui because I thought a Maori pilot called Moon Big Sky might amuse, well, one person anyway (but she didn't read the story). Marama incidentally is a fairly accepted first name, and I chose it as mine for Maori classes. Because: moon face! ;-)
Sarah never met the Rani, I don't think... so she might not know about her. The only other Timeys she'd know about would be the ones she saw in The Five Doctors, I think, so at least she'd *maybe* recognise the Master.
And yeah, Rani is a pretty common first name too. I've been *really* tempted to use dodgy Sanskrit names in various fics, but so far I've managed to limit myself to weird titles. One day I will write a story about maithuna as practiced by Vaidya and Ishvara and the glory of their combined kalalingams:P.
They also reused some clown makeup from Greatest Show, the sonic lipstick made the sonic screwdriver noise at one point, there was a picture of Clara from The Celestial Toymaker in the scrapbook...
Though the nature of the threat was ripped off from Stephen King's "It" and the resolution from the Trek episode Day Of The Dove...
