I saw this poster of the Master looking uncharacteristically... soft and wistful in a way. It really is an unusual picture. It looks like he's in love, ffs! Not that I'm complaining. So, in my mind, I explained that as the Doctor's vision of the Master, how he would want him to be, how he sometimes does see him. And how it really should be an image

To me, the poster looks like... if he's in love, it's kind of angsty love, and he's unsuccessfully trying not to show it, or something. The hologram, picture, though, does look just sort of soft and wistful and very non-angsty to me. That's a really interesting effect, considering that they're both pretty much the same picture.

Maybe because in the animation, there's the wistful concept of fading away? I dunno. But yeah, the original is an unusual pic. It's like he's trying not to smile, but you can see a really stupidly happy grin might be about to break out. And the Master would rather die than show that:D.

Oooh! You're right, that's just what the hologram would look like. And now I can't stop watching it and have the 'Madame de Pompadour' theme playing in my head because that's what I was listening to on repeat when I wrote that fic. (Because it's one of the saddest, most heart-breaking bits of music ever.) *sniffle*

VERY cool. Yeah, the poster is definitely that sort of idealized, soft-focus picture the Doctor has of the Master when he's not actually there tormenting him.
