I've sent off for a PicKnit kit.

I also emailed the Queen Royal Parks to ask whether we'd need a permit to do fundraising activities in St James Park and sadly they have forbidden us from PicKnitting in any of the Royal Parks. To be fair, they don't allow any soliciting of donations and that's probably no bad thing when you're trying to sit under

If we can't find a public park to do it in, I now have access to a massive and gorgeous communal garden which would be ideal for this sort of activity, so am happy to volunteer that. It's in West London though so might be a bit of a trek for some people! I have read our residents' rule book (yep, there is one) and there is nothing in it that says you can't solicit donations in the garden.
