Career Planning

Originally I said I would take it slow, and not take any classes this summer. In part, it's like, why not save the $500 or so. In part it's that I am not in a HUGE rush to get into nursing school because when I do make that transition, I will have to make a decision about going full time, and that is kind of a nightmare from several perspectives. Abnormal Psychology was one of the most fun introductory classes I've taken!

Apparently lots of other people think it's fun too. :)

On second thought, it might lose something in an accelerated class. I'm sure it'll still be interesting, but you probably won't be able to go as in depth.

The problem with Abnormal Psych is that you start applying names to all your friends' foibles... and worse, then you start on your own.

Oh, but at least if I took the class, I'd have the official names, instead of using, you know. Unofficial names.

I would take one that directly and certainly fills a requirement for the major. And it is definitely easy. And online? Why the h not?

Oh, the only one that actually fills a requirement is the hard one. I used the word "applicable" in a more theoretical sense, not in a required credits for the degree sense.

You're absolutely blowing my mind.

I'M SO PROFOUNDLY OPPOSED TO NON-REQUIRED COURSES!

You left school much more recently than I did. :)

re Anatomy & Physiology II: one thing to consider is that classes that are hardcore and meet over the summer versus a semester is that in some ways the work is easier; they know that you can't be spending your copious free evenings writing a 20-page paper IF YOU ARE IN THEIR CLASS. Sometimes the classes are smaller, so paradoxically you get more of the prof's attention.

Honestly, I'd suggest getting ahold of the prof if you can and just point-blank asking them which would be a better experience. It also depends on your best learning experience; if you don't intake info well auditorially, and will have to go back and re-read everything anyway, a compressed course is likely not the best idea.

Also, if you leave time between A&P I and A&P II, how much will you forget and have to relearn?

Another good point, but I feel OK about my retention, which may be foolish but I am not too worried.

I was also thinking along the lines of what you said in your first paragraph above.

I don't specifically take info well auditorally - I have to do all three, visual, audio, and tactile. I listen, but I have to re-read and then re-write everything too. I mean, to do really really well... I can pass on less effort.

The other advantage is that come fall, instead of facing another long slog through a tough class, I could take one of the fiddly-farty ones and have a good time.

I'm a big slacker so I say take some time...but, I also think that an online-only course might be cool, for all the reasons you list. I just wonder about burnout, depending what your fall semester is going to look like!

I recalled just now that one of the thoughts I had about the really, really hard class is that if I kick my own ass with it in the summer, then during the long fall semester I'd be taking something much easier.

At one class a semester I really hope I will not burn out, especially when I am only halfway through the second class I've even taken in 10 years! I am putting any thoughts of burnout out of my mind. It's unpossible!

Ah, well, if there's some easier choices available in the fall, I can see where that might be worth it. And I must say, the whole "Well how bad can 8 weeks be?" thing sounds tempting. Though it also sounds like issuing a direct challenge to the class! "Oh yeah? I can take 8 weeks! Bring it!!" And then what if the class really Brought It? Dang.

One class a semester on top of fulltime work. Just sayin'. I hope you're right, though! It is not my intention to be Debbie Downer. Maybe it is unpossible. =)

And then what if the class really Brought It?

That, my friend, is the question.
