A genetic counselor is like a social worker for people (usually expectant parents) undergoing some kind of genetic test, to help them anticipate and deal with the results, etc.
My mom saw a genetic counselor when she was going through her breast cancer. This person took all her family history and medical diagnosis into account in order to determine if this cancer was likely a genetic development, or environmentally influenced. It was kind of interesting. Turns out that there is a low probability that it's genetic. This is good news for me and my sister!
