Blanket permission is a way for fan artists to let other fans know their comfort with others playing with their works. It's particularly helpful to podficcers when authors give blanket permission for anyone to podfic their works without having to ask first. So, it's podfic week, and people are talking about a bunch of different topics every day. Today, the topic is Blanket Permission, and I'm just going to say a little bit about it because, well, let's be honest. I'm not really deep and insightful, and meta is one of my weak points.
I've already posted a blanket permission statement on my journal, but I'm going to say it again. Anyone has permission to podfic, translate, fanmix, remix, fanart, icon, whatever (including writing sequels or missing scenes from stories I've written). My only request is that you link back to the original work and then send me a link when you're done.
The one thing that I don't give permission for is third-party archiving; that is, don't take my original story and post it on another site. There's no reason for you to do that since most things end up on LJ, DW, and AO3, so I give people a lot of options when it comes to where to view them.
ETA: The third-party archiving applies only to the actual fic that I've written. Anybody who podfics or remixes or writes another scene or whatever can put their own work on any archive they want.
Why do I give blanket permission for things like podfic and art and remixes? Mostly because I think they're awesome. I listen to podfic pretty much every day, and just like I can reread my favorite stories over and over again, I can listen to my favorite podfics over and over again. Fanmixes and fanart are sometimes my favorite parts of any big bang, and those artists never get enough credit.
In conclusion, yay podfic! No, seriously, I've told you I can't meta, right?
