Well, Harry's BWL bro in the Sacrifices Arc seems like he's a selfish brat in the first couple books (probably because he is and then some), but he grows up as the series progresses and actually turns out to be an okay enough bloke.
If I'm remembering correctly he's an ass in Book 1, then alternates between being an asshat and being a decent kid in the next few books (2-4) but it's in Book 5 that he really matures as he starts to see his parents more clearly and realizes that he's not the center of the universe.
BWL aside, there's some great mentor!Snape here and eventually he even evolves into a honest to god father figure for Harry. In fact, the Snarry relationship depicted in this series is one of the most satisfying incarnations of their dynamic I've ever read. Unfortunately for your request, this is one of those super-manipulative!Dumbledore 'verses so if that's a deal-breaker then this story probably isn't for you.
