“Are you sure you don’t want to join us, Severus? The twins specifically asked after you.”
“I prefer to spend my evening in quiet, calm pursuits,” Snape replied. “The company of inebriated Gryffindors and celebratory Weasleys is unlikely to meet either criterion.”
Harry bit his lip; indecision was clearly written on his face.
Severus looked up from his book.
“Go, Potter. Enjoy yourself. I shall amuse myself here. I managed to do so for years without you.”
Harry nodded, and tossed his cloak over his shoulders.
“I should be home by midnight.”
“Mm-hmm.” Severus already appeared absorbed in his reading.

“He never wants to come out with me. I think he’s ashamed. Because I’m younger. And I’m not very clever. And-well-look at me!”
Harry drunkenly waved a clumsy hand, gesturing from messy hair to untidy trousers.
George clucked sympathetically.
“You’re imagining things, mate. Snape’s mad about you.”
“Then why-”
“Most people don’t trust him, even though the Wizengamot cleared him. Maybe he doesn’t want to turn public opinion against you,” Fred opined. “Besides, he never seems comfortable with us.”
Fred lowered his voice in a passable imitation of the Potions master. “Too boisterous by half, Mr Weasley.”

The clock chimed the hour, a single stroke.
Still no Harry.
He wouldn’t allow his insecurities to gain the upper hand.
He told himself that Harry was caught up in the excitement, celebrating the addition to his extended family. He told himself Harry wasn’t drinking with flirtatious young women and attractive young men. That it didn’t matter - to him or to Harry - that his young lover enjoyed activities Severus had no inclination to share.
“Keep telling yourself that, Severus.”
Why did his internal voice sound like Lucius bloody Malfoy?
Severus glanced at the clock again.
He wished Harry was home.
