Went to a convention this weekend ..

... only this time it was the Star Trek 45th Anniversary at the Rio in Las Vegas!

As a long time Trekkie I thought it was important to be there for this anniversary.  It's purported to be Nimoy's next to last fandom appearance and his Spock has always been my favorite.  I'll bore those interested with pics and gory details under the cut.  For ( Read more... )

I'm so glad that the con was good (and sorry that the Rio was bad).

I envy you the Nimoy session particularly... he's always been my favorite.

Yeah, the Rio was no fun. But the con was well worth the trouble. I'm sorry you missed Nimoy too. To me he always comes across as a deeply passionate man who takes his art very seriously. Where everyone else on stage was there to entertain and have fun, he was on a mission to share his life story and his passion for creativity. He truly mesmerized the crowd for 40 minutes then signed autographs for hours. For me, his appearance made the entire trip worthwhile.

Unfortunately, there was no video taping allowed but I'm sure some caught some snippets of his talk. Also, I believe his last performance is coming up soon at a smaller convention somewhere in the East. You may want to check into it if you want to catch him in person.

BTW, it's so great to hear from you. Sorry I'm so out of touch most of the time. Miss you!

Wow. Janeway's not ever getting in that jumpsuit again, is she? Not that I'm in any position to criticise.

Lovely to see Shatner, Stewart, and Nimoy. And people take so much trouble with their costumes, don't they?

I still love Kirk best.

Yeah, I think those jumpsuit days are over! And for me as well!! I'd never seen her in person before this event and found her to be impressive. She has a forceful personality that made it easy to see why they chose her to be the first and only female Trek captain.

I love to see the costumes. I have no idea how those girls can walk around in green paint all day but there were lots of them.

And I know you still love Kirk best. I was thinking of you when Shatner was popping out of every corner all weekend for his documentary. I got the sense I was paying for my negative Kirk comments back in April. I was sure it was due to you working your magical revenge spell on me!

Awesome! Brad and I talked briefly about trying to go to this Con, but we weren't too serious b/c we're in money lockdown and neither of us care for crowds. LOL But it looks awesome! We've been watching TOS, and we're on season 3, disc 5 right now. I totally understand the anyone's Spock-love, as I have it myself. ;) Nimoy's pretty damn fantastic, so seeing him must have been cool. I wish I had known you were gonna be here in Vegas--I would have loved to catch up with you again! *hugs*
(oh, and I STILL want to stroke Patrick Stewart's hot bald head)

I'm such and LJ loser. As I was landing in Vegas I was thinking about contacting you and seeing if there was a way to meet up over the weekend. Naturally, I never put action to the thought so it was a missed opportunity. Sorry about that - I would have loved to hang out with you ( ... )

Kinda wish I'd followed through with going now... lol... I didn't know anyone else on my flist was going. Glad you had a good time, though I'm curious over your reasons to not want to return to Rio.

I have to say in the UK Star Trek cons still have a lot more element of fan organised events... like our annual Klingon/Starfleet Banquet held in October every year... and we special guests at those most years.

Bring on October, lol.

I wish you'd come too. It seems like I haven't seen you in forever!

The Rio tower my room was in was really old. It showed evidence of total neglect and I had an unwanted experience with creepy crawlies. The staff was rude in dealing with the problem but I eventually was switched to a different room. That one was better but by then I had soured on the whole Rio experience. If I ever go to this event again, I won't stay there again.

Do you dress as a Klingon? That would look good on you if you do. I think the fan organized events spark more interesting conversation. This one was more about the celebrities than the fans.

I dress in Klingon uniform but with only half-Klingon ridges =P My dad is a full Klingon but my mum is a Betazoid... so I'm half/half =P

I don't always do Klingon though... I also have TNG medical uniform.

And ick on the bugs... I totally would have gone all British on them when complaining, haha... but nice to know if I ever go.

Finally caught this. Sorry about the bugs. Ew. Waht kind were they? I hope they weren't bed bugs as they get in your luggage...

Sorry you had to go alone too. Shoulda called. I'd been on the next flight lol. Then I could have stood in between you and Shatner.

I would have liked seeing Nimoy. That sounds awesome and yet sad. I am totally an original series fan (though I watched them all...well, not Enterprise. I tried but it sucked way too much.) How great would it have been to go to a con back in the day and seen Nimoy, Shatner and Kelley together...sigh.

I'm assuming they were bed bugs so I never brought the luggage back into the house. The clothes went straight into the washer - including those I was wearing! I can only hope these precautions were enough to prevent the little critters from following me home.

Going alone was an extremely last-minute development. But next time I'll hold you to being on the next flight!

Seeing Nimoy was amazing. I found a link to some of his presentation on youtube here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0Q6TAC2pbI. His story was fascinating even though I'd heard parts of it many times before. His voice garbled in places but it kept everyone hanging on his every word.

I believe De Kelley is the only Trek original cast member I've never seen in person. That's something I deeply regret now. Sigh indeed!
