Cat and work (or money making, anyway) advice needed. Or a sympathetic ear.

I hate being poor.  I really, truly hate it.  I know that compared to many people - even some I work with - I am privileged and doing well.  This says more about how deeply fucked up things are in the country and the world than it does about my financial situation.

I need to find a way to make extra money so that I can afford a one bedroom apartment ( Read more... )

The only thought I have is that maybe you could wrangle editing some online or low-key publications, perhaps even on a volunteer basis. Or copy editing. If you get some credits to your name that way, maybe you wrangle that into paid gigs. Possibly advertise yourself as an editor-for-hire for people self-publishing their work.

That's a thought.

I wish I had some kind of money-making advise to give you. I know what it feels like to always have to squeeze every penny until it bleeds. It's pure soul-killing misery. :(

I can only say I hope that something turns up.

Thanks.

It's the American way, unfortunately. In a sane, just world my job would pay a true living wage, not a just-getting-by-while-living-in-a-microscopic-apartment wage.

Even given how bad things are here in the old country atm, I'm boggled by what kind of society makes people work the sort of hours you guys do and then pays a pittance scarcely enough to live on leading so many to need second or even third jobs and still lays claim to being the 'land of the free'. It's pure insanity! It boggles me even more that people put up with it. Proves that 'divide and rule' still works a treat I suppose!

People really don't have the option to not put up with it. In this economy, I don't think even trying to unionize would work - most (all?) workplaces would just fire everyone. There's no shortage of replacement workers.

If you list things on ebay, make sure that you only bother listing things that will sell for a good chunk of cash. Otherwise the seller's fees will eat up your profit. Craigslist might be a cheaper option than ebay.

If the cats are what is making your financial situation desperate, however... Then you may have to get rid of one of the cats. Again, Craigslist or Petfinder might be good options so that you can ensure that your cat goes directly to a good home instead of to a shelter.

Well, that lets out eBay, since I don't own anything of much value. Craigslist is still vaguely a possibility. I do have a 360 I don't use, but which I can't sell to used electronics stores because it's from the first batch that tended to die. I don't see getting much for it, though. And I can't really see charging enough for any kind of art or craft I could do, that'd get too much into the whole selling thing

My financial situation isn't desperate so much as crappy and stagnant. I don't have - and can't get - a college degree. I'm pretty much stuck in poverty, like many people, with no prospects for getting out, short of winning money or embarking on a life of crime. Max is hardly standing between me and a life of ease, and Smokey isn't the only reason I want a larger apartment. The fact that my kitchen is the size of a small closet (I can't even open my fridge all the way) tops that list. I just want a regular source of income that gives me padding, or alows me consider slightly more expensive apartments.

Blah.
