Burst actually works quite well, in the context given. A semi-auto with the ability to actually fire a three-round burst with the single pull of a trigger is illegal in the USA (unless you have a very, very expensive permit). However, you can fire as fast as you can pull the trigger with any firearm. I have often heard these shot groupings referred to as "bursts."

"Group" also works. "Tap," however, refers to specific acts of double-tapping, and I doubt that was what these fellows were doing.
