I ended up voting Independent Green, because Allen appalled me the past few months, and there were too many issues I didn't agree with Webb on. It's the second time I've had to go independent in a Senate race - when Oliver North ran against Chuck Robb was another. I really don't like it when neither of the candidates are anyone I'd want in public office. But it does show the power of small numbers of voters.

Allen's just embarrassing and I think I sold a little piece of my soul to push the button for Jim Webb. When I was at USNA in '96, people still owned t-shirts that said, "Women can't fight" (Twenty years later! You'd think they'd get over it!) and we all had to read "A Sense of Honor" which pretty much endorses hazing. I didn't actually predict we'd end up with something this close, but I always go in with the worst case scenario in mind.

i do understand the distate over webb (and my dad worked with him 20 years ago, so there is particular distate in my family), but this just makes me frustrated - democratic control of the senate would mean so much for issues like judicial nominations.

I have a grand and bitter distaste for Webb (and now I feel all pleased that other people have distaste for him as well!) but I felt the entire situation was by far, the lesser evil.

oh yes; more specifically, my dad worked in the pentagon on manpower readiness in the 80s which meant he was clashing directly with webb, and getting him started on webb's opposition to women in the military is a mistake if you don't have a couple of hours :). but yes - by far the lesser evil, if for nothing else than because of all of the things it would help prevent BUSH from doing.

At least you were angling for the win. :) Sometimes it's all about tactics.

Edit @ 11:42: The gap's down to less than 5,000 votes for Allen. Only 2.5% of the vote is uncounted but...geez. Webb just closed 7,000 votes in the same amount. This might be better than football.

and under virginia law, there's an automatic recount if the gap is less than .5% of the votes, but the recount can't start until the election is certified, and the election can't be certified for at least 10 days, so...it could be awhile.

i may need more alcohol :).

Thank goodness I live in MD, that's all I have to say, that was an easy vote considering Erlich and Steele are morons.

my parents also vote in maryland, and my father was grumbling before voting about the fact that the race was close enough for him to feel obligated to actually go to the polls. (they also live in montgomery county, so after the giant mess that was the primaries there, he was skeptical of the machines working.) this morning, however, i sent them an e-mail suggesting that perhaps they should consider moving to virginia so that they can have a bigger impact :).
