Northern Migration- Prologue

As most of you know, I've been contemplating getting my MFA in Metals for quite a while now but something always seemed to happen that made me put off applying. Usually, it was the fact that I was broke. This year, I realized that simply remaining in Erie would pretty much guarantee that I was always broke, so I bit the bullet & applied to a ( Read more... )

Toast sounds yummy, and I'm glad you've got a honey! My husband is 6 yrs my junior, and *he's* the one freaking about getting to 50. When I was more readily available for poly arrangements (not that I'm linked now), I put the limit at 15 yrs my junior: beyond that, there was too large a culture gap I wasn't interested in bridging.

I often wondered, when I was broke and unemployed, why people said I should cut my losses and try elsewhere, just how I was supposed to do that on no money.

I hope UND does well for you. Where in ND is it?

I am in Grand Forks, ND-- about an hour north of Fargo & a couple hours south of Singer.

I often wondered, when I was broke and unemployed, why people said I should cut my losses and try elsewhere, just how I was supposed to do that on no money.

Me, too! The other one that gets me is, "Why don't you just get a job?" to which I always want to respond, "Oh, gee. Why did I think of that" with as much sarcasm as I could possible muster. Erie was in a solid recession long before the rest of the country & we've had a number of major employers pull up stakes.

It's more common than people realize. Turns out a bunch of my SCA friends also have some major age gaps, too.

Will you have to plug in your engine at night?

I love cold weather. You will have proper cold. We could trade for a week -- I'll got to your house and you can come here and laugh at the English thinking it's cold. :)

Glad to hear good news about school and a relationship!!! Sorry about the stupid government. My sister was a census worker also; I haven't heard if she's receiving unemployment again or not.

Will definitely need to plug in the engine-- once I get the heater installed,, which will be after I get my student loan money.

I'd *love* to come visit! And have you come over-- but you'd really enjoy sub-zero temperatures?

The UC thing is weird. *BUT* at least I can keep getting it while I'm in school, which will be a big help. Just keep your fingers crossed that it gets worked out before my next rent payment is due.

Yes, I actually like sub-zero temperatures. See, 32 F (0 C) isn't cold for me; I only think it's cold once it's below 0 F. I used to walk to work in sub-zero temps and snow... I never have the central heating on here in England because it doesn't get cold enough. 0 C isn't cold to me. (But then I spent 21 years in Colorado and my childhood home in Pennsylvania didn't have heat in the bedrooms. I know that Pennsylvania is warmer than North Dakota, but as a teenager I spent a lot of time in my warm with the door closed -- no heat whatsover in the winter.)

Any chance of picking up TA work? Or is that part of your assistantship?

Glad to hear more of the details behind your move and hooray for your relationship! You're as old as you feel and that goes for both of you!

Can't wait to read about your metal adventures in grad school.

After hanging out with some old high school friends a couple weeks ago, I feel very young indeed. They moved to the bar next door because the band was too loud for them! This is a band that my *Mom* was dancing to when she saw them play. They also all went home well before midnight. I told them they were wusses. :-)
