[ Chapter 8 ]

Leaping Through Clouds... and Falling

***

Traveling had always fascinated Jaejoong. He loved seeing places, meeting people and learning about different cultures, but it was getting there that he had always had a problem with. He hated flying. The thought of being stuck inside a suspended object without strings supporting it made his stomach churn in nervousness.

He gulped, wiping the tiny beads of sweat that formed along his hairline. After sitting on the runaway for a good few minutes, the engine roared as the airplane finally took off. He heaved a deep and troubled sigh as he felt them lift off the ground. His fingers clenched around the armrest in a death grip. But knowing he was right next to Yunho, it calmed him down a little.

The sudden drop in air pressure inside the cabin added to his shallow breathing. He took a peek at Yunho. His face appeared calm but those eyes showed the frustration he was feeling towards Jaejoong.

Yunho had the right to be mad. Jaejoong understood that.

“Yunho-yah, are you still mad at me?” Jaejoong tried to reach for Yunho’s clenched hand, but he snatched it away. He glared at Jaejoong.

“What do you think?” he snarled.

“I’m sorry,” he bit his lip.

Yunho glared at him before speaking with such venom in his voice. “Is everything a game to you, Jaejoong?”

“You seemed out of it the last few days, I just thought you needed a break from work.” Jaejoong explained.

“But what made you think I want to spend it with you?” Yunho didn’t look at him, eyes bored into the floor.

“I said I’m sorry.” Jaejoong whispered. “I didn’t think it would be such a big deal.”

“Exactly, you didn’t think,” Yunho scoffed. “You only cared about what would benefit you the most.”

"No, it's..." Jaejoong looked at Yunho pleadingly. He felt his lungs close up as sadness, and hurt started to consume him.

“You think forcing me to spend a week with you will make me forget about Soojin? And then what?” Yunho hissed, shaking his head. “You’re even crazier than I originally thought.”

Jaejoong felt ashamed. A part of him did hope for it to happen, but he just really wanted to spend more time with Yunho. He wanted to be with him in a place where he could pretend that Soojin didn’t exist in Yunho’s life… that it was just the two of them.

Why was it becoming harder to breathe?

He was about to explain himself but held his words when Yunho pressed for the service button. A blushing flight attendant approached Yunho with a smile, asking if he needed help with something.

Yunho flashed a bright smile. “I was wondering, is there an empty seat around that I could switch to?”

Jaejoong wanted to cry. He kept his head down, his breathing calculated.

“Oh, there’s a vacant seat up front,” she nodded. “Is there a problem with the seating arrangement, sir?” she asked with a small smile, sounding robotic.

Before Yunho could answer, Jaejoong stood up and gathered his things. “It’s fine. You can stay. I’ll move,” he said without fuss. “It does feel kind of stuffy here.”

Yunho ignored the sudden rush of guilt that had overcome his entire being as he watched Jaejoong being led to the front row seat. The only reason he asked about it because he only needed to clear his head for a little while but he planned on coming back once he had calmed down. He wasn’t really planning on leaving Jaejoong’s side the entire flight.

***

After storing his luggage in the overhead compartment, he carefully avoided the sleeping man and took the vacant seat by the window. The seatbelt sign turned on, as they were suddenly hit with turbulence. Feeling alone, and hurt, he silently let his tears roll down his cheeks. He wanted to be next to Yunho.

“A-are you okay?” he heard someone asked from the side. He refused to look at the man with his current state.

“Yes,” he hissed, quickly wiping his cheeks dry. “I just really hate flying,” he said truthfully.

“Me too,” the stranger chuckled.

Jaejoong glared. “Are you making fun of me?”

“I’m not.” The stranger smiled, shaking his head. “Let me introduce myself,” he said, holding out his hand. “I’m Shirota Yuu.”

“Kim Jaejoong.” Jaejoong took his hand, nodding a little.

Shirota was a nice and funny guy, Jaejoong thought. He learned that he’s a Spanish-Japanese model and he had just finished a project in Korea so now he was headed to Bora-Bora for vacation. They talked and shared some of their interesting travel experiences and sometimes threw in some random funny stories.

For a moment, Jaejoong was distracted and forgot all about the stubborn man seated two rows behind him, who was fuming and staring at the back of his head. He then excused himself for a brief visit to the lavatory. After washing his hands, he opened the door and was surprised to see Yunho standing next in line.

“Excuse me,” Jaejoong pursed his lips, pushing his way past Yunho. He gasped when he was pushed back inside. “What are you doing?!” he asked, bewildered.

“No, what are you doing?” Yunho hissed.

“What did I do now?!” Jaejoong bit back. His back pressed against the sink, backing away as Yunho loomed over him.

Yunho opened his mouth, but closed it again. He wasn’t going to say it pissed him off that Jaejoong was having the time of his life with that Casanova while he was left at the back wallowing in annoyance.

“Y-You were hogging the toilet.” Yunho wanted to facepalm.

“You’re… getting bent out of shape just because I took longer to piss?” Jaejoong deadpanned. “You’re so childish! Well here, take all the time you need-”

Jaejoong stilled when a sudden turbulence hit the airplane resulting to a slight drop in altitude.

Yunho snorted. “Oh, now I’m the childish one?” He paused noticing the change in Jaejoong. His eyes were clenched shut, fingers gripping the edge of the sink.

Yunho peered closely. “Jaejoong-ah, are you okay?”

“I’m f-fine-” his breath hitched as he felt the airplane shook violently.

“Ah,” Yunho smiled a little in understanding. “You don’t like flying much, do you?” he guessed, closing the distance between them.

“Shut up,” Jaejoong’s lips quivered, warmth hitting Yunho’s lips as they were just a breath away.

Without thinking much of his actions, Yunho held Jaejoong by the shoulders, hands softly trailing down his arms. He pulled him closer, gently stroking the small of Jaejoong’s back.

Jaejoong was on cloud nine. He would have laughed if he weren’t so nervous. Because considering present circumstances, they were midair literally floating through clouds.

Although he really wouldn’t have minded if Yunho lost his balance and fell for him, in fact, he would gladly push him over the edge if he had control over his emotions. But he could only watch, wait, and hope for Yunho to take the leap.

And should something unexpected happen; Jaejoong was more than ready to catch him because he had already fallen and all this time, he had just been waiting.

Jaejoong rested his head on Yunho’s chest, a shiver running down his spine as he listened to soothing words Yunho was whispering to his ear. His breathing calmed down, but he felt his heart rate speed up like it was running a marathon.

“I’m sorry,” Jaejoong whispered.

Yunho remained silent, hands gently stroking Jaejoong’s back. He was furious of what Jaejoong and Yoochun did. He felt annoyed, and insulted especially, for tricking him like this. But more than that, he was terrified.

This… what he was doing, the confusion he was feeling… it scared him.

A knock on the door broke them apart. It was the flight attendant, telling them to get back to their seats for they were experiencing turbulence. Whether she was baffled to find the two of them inside, she made sure not to make it obvious.

Jaejoong was red in the cheeks, both from embarrassment that they were caught and from the feel of Yunho’s hand that held his firmly. He kept his head lowered as they made their way back, unaware of the confused look of his new friend as they went past his row. Yunho on the other hand, didn’t miss the chance to send a piercing glare at the man.

“Uh, this isn’t…” Jaejoong’s eyes widened when he was ushered to seat next to Yunho.

“Don’t be ridiculous. This is your assigned seat,” Yunho dismissed.

“But my things-”

“Never mind. I’ll get them later,” Yunho mumbled. “It’s a long flight. Get some rest.”

Another violent shake, but it didn’t deter Jaejoong anymore. Knowing that he was next to Yunho, he knew he was safe. He smiled, and rested his head on Yunho’s shoulder despite the other man’s grouching.

“If you drool on me, I’ll kill you.”

Jaejoong just hummed contentedly, staring at the dark clouds zooming by the window and then finally succumbed to sleep.

He still hated flying.
