Lighter was more familiar with cutting trees down than helping them grow. That's not to say he was some crazy forester who cut down everything in his path or anything-- his cabin back home just needed an ample lumber supply to readily repair the damage from those constant lightning bolts. Thank god that was over.

Anyway, since helping repair and repopulate the greenhouse last year, Lighter took it upon himself to tend to the tomato plant he contributed. Since then one plant had become several, and while they weren't going to win any ribbons anytime soon they were tasty enough. And in the greenhouse they could grow all year!

His current batch was just ripe enough to harvest, so after his morning woodshop class he headed down to pick some tomatoes. Maybe he'd ask Nancy to whip something up with them for a late lunch. Mm...

"The greenhouse."

He gestured around and took another look at the tomato Lighter had offered him, as though it were a simple peace offering. Not that Caim had any outrageous ideas to outwardly destroy whatever uneasy peace Lighter was going through.

"You only lose your mind if you have one to begin with."

And Caim seriously doubted he had anything like that nowadays.

Lighter wondered how likely it was Caim was joking. He had such a serious-looking face...

"Well, if you ain't got one then you'll fit right in." He picked up the basket in one hand and his lumber in the other, placing said wood in its usual spot over his shoulder. "You plannin' to just stick around the greenhouse and live in it then, or what?"

He shook his head at Lighter's question. He did have to think twice about the possibility of everyone else being crazy. From what he could see, they were all rather standard people. No matter. Standard or not he didn't really care as long as they didn't get in his way.

"Just keeping an eye on things here. I also watch the city, the dormitories, the hallways."

"Huh. So what're you watching for anyway? Are you a spy?"

"No."

It was a simple way to respond. Then he supposed Lighter had been so accepting and not really rude, that he probably didn't need to be rude either.

"I have only recently arrived. I am acquainting myself."

"Welcome to the greenhouse, then." He shrugged, shifting the basket so he held it against his side. "Careful of the plants. Some of'em walk and talk."

"I've seen worse."

Two words. Flying. Babies.

Not that he was going to tell Lighter as much. And then he had a delightful idea. Well, sort of delightful. It was only going to be delightful if his plan actually worked. If he got bored...

"Do the plants eat people?"

This one Lighter actually had to think about. He hadn't heard of any of the plants actually eating anyone, no, but there were several polka-dotted ones with big teeth. He gave a half-hearted shrug.

"Y'know, I wouldn't really be surprised if they did."

Caim fingered his chin for a few moments and then he nodded. Well, he knew what his next plan of action was going to be. There was nothing wrong with testing. Besides, it might come in handy, just in case flying children came and invaded this place as well. He could simply feed the children to the plants.

And certainly they had a place where they served food. He could experiment with the food from there, as he doubted it was fit for human consumption.

"I see. Well. I suppose I can let you know once I have found out."

His lips were tempted to curl up into sinister smile, but somehow he refrained. He doubted that Lighter was really going to want to know anyway.

Lighter himself wasn't sure if he wanted to know about them or not. He was convinced that at this point nothing could surprise him, yet things still kept catching him off guard... Well, if nothing tried to eat him in here yet, he was probably fine.

"That'd be nice," he said at last, even if it wasn't entirely true. But it was the polite thing, he figured. He gave Caim a curt nod before starting to head out. "I can't speak for none of the other plants but you can go ahead and eat as many tomatoes as you want, so long as you don't kill the plants."

Actually, Caim's entire plan had been to feed Lighter to one of the plants. But in hindsight, the man had given him a tomato. If anything, Lighter could prove useful when one needed to acquire food or something like it. He watched Lighter turn to go and he nodded ever so slightly.

"Your assistance is appreciated."

And it was. Lighter hadn't turned out anything the way Caim had expected him to. It just went to show that there was more to judge in a person than simply an initial impression
