Brock always trained his team early in the morning, and today was surprised to find he was not alone. It certainly wasn't an adverse turn of events, really. The field was big enough to share, and seeing Brendan out with his team was sort of a nice surprise.

He knew the younger boy didn't really like to battle (and he was very like Brendan in that regard), so Brock was admittedly curious as to why he was out on the field so early.

The gym leader raised a hand in greeting. "Hey. Mind some company?"

Brendan was just about to get started on his training with Swellow and Mudkip together when he saw Brock make his way over.

"Hello! I don't mind!" He replied with a smile. Swellow just stood behind him preening her feathers while Mudkip gave a wave at Brock. Brendan had no clue who used the training grounds on a daily basis since he rarely came over to this area, so he decided to ask. "Do you come here often?"

"Every morning." He said, walking closer and stretching a little. "Just to get a little training in. We're not big battlers, but we have to stay in shape for any potential challengers, you know?"

Oh right. Brock was a gym leader in the Kanto region, wasn't he? Brendan was only familiar with the Hoenn region, and even with that he hadn't completely gotten to know the gym leaders other than where their gyms were located. It wasn't often that he got to talk to a gym leader period, so he decided to take this opportunity to just get some questions that were bugging him just by a tiny bit.

"How often do you get trainers challenging you?" He asked.

Cyrus was wandering around the fields, or looked to be, anyway. Really he knew exactly where he was going, but casual observers would see him staring at the ground as he walked and talking to himself.

He needed to be stronger. His pokémon needed to be untouchable. But without any trustworthy training opponent, he had to pit them against each other.

Although today may be different. There was someone there, and he approached.

"In this state, it is unacceptable. I seek a challenge. Do you believe you can provide such a thing?"

Prepared to be disappointed Cyrus.

Brendan wasn't familiar with Cyrus. He wasn't in the teacher's class, but he heard a bit from Lucas about this man some time ago. He tried not to be judgmental, but it would be a lie to say that he wasn't avoiding the other. So when he saw Cyrus come up to talk to him, he wasn't sure whether to accept the battle or not. If this was a month ago, Brendan definitely would have left the training field, though. Mudkip just gazed up at Cyrus with a curious look on his face.

"...Uh..." Oh gee, what a great way to start a conversation. "I'll do my best to make it a challenge, but I'm up for a battle right now. Would one-on-one be okay with you, uh...?"

"Very well." He called out Honchkrow to the other side of the field and began to walk over. If he had noticed that Brendan had asked his name, he didn't react to it.

This guy didn't seem like he was the friendliest training someone could meet. Brendan scratched the back of his head, still feeling a bit unsure about this battle; but he was there to train, and so was this teacher, right? He shook his seconding thoughts off and moved over to his side of the field, Mudkip following over.

It's been a while since he had been in a battle. In fact, wasn't this his first day actually battling another trainer? And this guy seemed like he had a ton more experience than himself... He was just going to do this best.

"Alright Mudkip." Brendan spoke to his partner as he knelt down beside him. "It looks like we're fighting a flying type, so our ground moves wouldn't work on that guy. It our first battle, so let's give it our best!"

Mudkip gave a nod in response before jumping out into the field towards his opponent.
