It was a nice autumn day. )
He needed to be stronger. His pokémon needed to be untouchable. But without any trustworthy training opponent, he had to pit them against each other.
Although today may be different. There was someone there, and he approached.
"In this state, it is unacceptable. I seek a challenge. Do you believe you can provide such a thing?"

Brendan wasn't familiar with Cyrus. He wasn't in the teacher's class, but he heard a bit from Lucas about this man some time ago. He tried not to be judgmental, but it would be a lie to say that he wasn't avoiding the other. So when he saw Cyrus come up to talk to him, he wasn't sure whether to accept the battle or not. If this was a month ago, Brendan definitely would have left the training field, though. Mudkip just gazed up at Cyrus with a curious look on his face.
"...Uh..." Oh gee, what a great way to start a conversation. "I'll do my best to make it a challenge, but I'm up for a battle right now. Would one-on-one be okay with you, uh...?"

It's been a while since he had been in a battle. In fact, wasn't this his first day actually battling another trainer? And this guy seemed like he had a ton more experience than himself... He was just going to do this best.
"Alright Mudkip." Brendan spoke to his partner as he knelt down beside him. "It looks like we're fighting a flying type, so our ground moves wouldn't work on that guy. It our first battle, so let's give it our best!"
Mudkip gave a nod in response before jumping out into the field towards his opponent.

The bird spread its wings, the air before them seeming to vibrate and shimmer as it seemed to be night right before the span. With a cry, it sent that darkness forward.

But Mudkip, on the other hand, apparently did not take Brendan's words seriously and that it was really their first fight at Smash Academy and that he really should have been more alert and actually tried to avoid the hit better.
The Dark Pulse made its hit, sending Mudkip into the air with a cry.
