Neris responded with a 'hmm' as she gazed at the counter area. She was awfully curious of how they prepared dead fishes... Did they just bring out alive ones and smack them to death like how they do in some cartoons? Her attention got diverted away when Otacon started talking to a hostess. When they arrived at the room, she curiously gazed around the place. No chairs!
"How come this place has no chairs?" She asked as she started getting into the room. Asian customs of taking off shoes? What are those?
Thankfully, he gently put his hand so she couldn't get in completely.
"It's Japanese tradition to take off your shoes," he explained. "the restaurant is traditional. There are no chairs simply because it is customary. Before modern heating, the living room was also where they cooked the meals, in a small pit in the center of the room. It was easier to sit on the floor rather than have a chair. B-but the mats are really comfortable!" He took off his shoes and sat on one as an example. "See?"
Neris listened intently to the other as he explained. There were so many different kinds of customs for humans! It must be really difficult to remember all of them... She watched Otacon take his shoes off, feeling confused of why they couldn't get into the room without taking their shoes off first.
"Why do we have to take our shoes off for this room?" She asked as she took off hers.
"A-ah, well, it's considered to be polite," he explained. "You'd be bringing in dirt into a room, or house, giving your host more work and that's disrespectful." He waited her to sit down before continuing, presenting her with the menu.
"Hmmm, there's so many rules in different places, it's so confusing...!" Neris said with a small sigh. So many rules with FEET. From how you walk, what kind off shoes would go with what kind of dresses, and then where you're supposed to take shoes off. Not that she minded about coordinating her outfits, that was fun. Learning wasn't something Neris was very good at. Ah well, they were here to eat! She took the menu and opened it up...
"Oh wow, there's so many different kinds!" She exclaimed, gazing over at the list.
