This wasn't right - Ribbon's answer definitely wasn't a very good cover-up, but at least for the moment he should answer her question.

As worried as he is, he isn't going to shove everything aside to keep pushing. But that doesn't mean he'll stop trying entirely today. He definitely doesn't plan to go back without his answer.

"It's really peaceful, especially now that Dr. Eggman is away from it. It's where I was born, and a lot of other animals live there as well. Full of forests, plains, sea..." For a split second, Tails was in awe remembering his old days at the island. But, quickly snapping back to reality, he sighed; if he let himself get off track too much, he'd never get to the point.

It was time to go direct and just give it to her straight. He also found it hard to look her in the eye as he continued.

"L-Look, Ribbon, I know something's wrong. M-Maybe it's just me, but... If something's bothering you, you could always tell me." He crossed his arms, looking a tad worried. However, he looked her in the eyes with a solemn ( ... )

Ribbon wasn't able to say a word to her friend, not that she wanted to begin with. Not to mention his current expression and concern for her well-being's giving her more than enough incentive to keep her from opening her mouth. Does he really need to know?

Then again, Goombella advised her not so long ago to tell him the truth. It's never good to lie to your friend(or anyone for that matter), especially one you're supposedly having a 'relationship' with. But what if he doesn't speak to her again? Is it really worth the possibility of losing his friendship?

"...I don't want to hurt you..."

If this entire situation (and her demeanor at the ball) hadn't confirmed the truth before, this certainly did now. But, unlike when he talked to Sonic about it, he knew he understood how she felt. And he didn't feel it was right to have a relationship with someone who doesn't feel the same way about you as you do about them.

Besides, her friendship was enough for him. He nodded slightly to tell her that he (more than likely) knew what she wanted to say.

"It... it wouldn't hurt." In all technicality, knowing this was coming did hurt him, but going through with it didn't feel as bad.

Ribbon held her head down, not at all able to look at Tails in the eyes as she doesn't want to see his face when telling him what he doesn't want to hear. It's now or never; there's no point in prolonging the inevitable. He has the right to know and she will tell him.

"I... I..." Why is she stalling? She has every reason to; she's scared... scared of hurting her friend, scared of losing said friend, scared of what others might think if he's to tell them what happened. What will Knuckles think of her?

Tears began to form in her eyes as she mustered up the courage to tell it like it is. There's no turning back, but hopefully the fox will find it in his heart to forgive her.

"I... I don't want to be your girlfriend anymore!"

Tails never thought that hearing those words would shock him like that. But they did.

So it was true. His fears were true...

"I figured that you didn't want to... be in a relationship with me... But... all I would ever want in the end is your friendship... and that's what I'm afraid of losing..."

And right now, more than ever, his worry for her grew. Somehow, he felt that doing this early was the right thing to do, before things could have spiraled out of control.
