"You might need this."

It had been Catherine’s idea to make love right before work. Now they were both paying the price. They had fifteen minutes to be there and neither one was close to ready. They ran around, collecting clothes from a room that looked like it was hit by a tornado.
Catherine crawled around on the floor, looking for her other shoe. She peaked under the bed before extending a long arm underneath it, clasping on to something.
“Hey Sara, here’s your other shoe!” Catherine said, brushing herself off and standing.
“Thank you!” Sara shot out a hand and plopped onto the bed, yanking her shoe on as Catherine continued her search.
“Aha!” She called out, a few minutes later. How her shoe had managed to get into the bathtub, she would never know.
They did a quick scan of the room for remaining items.
“You might need this.” Catherine dangled Sara’s ID badge in front of her, a smirk crawling across her face.
“Oh God. Where was that?” Sara laughed.
“Draped over the lamp shade.” Sara snatched her ID from Catherine and they ran out the door.
Needless to say, they made it with only seconds to spare and Sara was one sock short.

Catherine lay on her bed, sobbing. Sara’s ring was clutched in her hand. They’d had a fight again and Sara had thrown her ring across the room.
This time, Catherine knew it was her fault. She still hadn’t told her mother about their relationship and Sara was beginning to feel like Catherine was ashamed of her.
The young woman had delivered an ultimatum. Catherine had to tell her mother, or Sara would break up with her. The older woman had, of course, told her she was being ridiculous and that’s when Sara hurled her ring and stormed out of the room.
She knew she should be the first to apologize, but she was so stubborn. Yet she knew how much she could not live without Sara and she sat up and dried her eyes on her sleeve. Standing up, she walked to the guest room knocked at the door.
“Come in.” She heard Sara choke the words out.
Catherine walked into the room and lay on the bed beside her lover. “Sara, I am so sorry. I will tell her. I’ll tell her today if you want me to.”
Sara rolled over to face the older woman. “Please. I wouldn’t beg, but it’s putting such a strain on our relationship.”
“I know, baby, I know.” Catherine leaned in to kiss the younger woman on the cheek before grabbing her right hand. “You might need this.” She whispered, slipping the ring back into its proper place before sobbing into the younger woman’s shoulder.

Sara looked into Catherine’s eyes. Her face was suddenly serious as she stroked the older woman’s cheek. “I have to go Cat.”
“I know.” The older woman barely let the words leave her lips before she snatched her lover up and kissed her. “I love you.”
    “I love you too.”
“How long will you be gone?”
“I don’t know.” Sara brushed her fingers through the older woman’s hair and kissed her on the cheek. Tears ran down her face as she looked her in the eyes again. “I am going to miss you so much Cat.”
“Please let me go with you!” Catherine sobbed.
“You know I can’t do that.” Sara whispered. She stooped down for a second and reached into her bag. “You might need this.” She said, handing Catherine a small box. “To remember me by.”
Catherine opened the lid and lifted the locket that was seated neatly inside it. She opened the clasp and saw a picture of Sara and Lindsey inside. She threw her arms around the younger woman. “Thank you.” She whispered.
