Slumber Birthday Party

The tea party room in the House of Arch has been re-arranged. The chests of dress-up clothes are still there, but the large table is gone. In its place are comfy, overstuffed chairs, a long sofa, and several cushions and bean bags scattered about. There is a small table loaded with snacks like crisps, dips, cupcakes, candy, and soda. Makeovers!!!!

There is a box of makeup and fingernail polish beside one of the trunks of dress-up clothes. The trunks themselves are overflowing with old silk and velvet gowns of many eras, as well as more modern accoutrements such as boas, shawls, and floppy hats.

Mary is eyeing the assorted items very warily indeed.

"What is all of this for?"

"It's for dress up! And look-" She holds up tubes and bottles of glisteny pink. "We have makeup."

Or, at least, lip gloss and fingernail polish.

"It is all pink."

Mary frowns. She doesn't have anything against pink, but it might be nice to at least see some other colors represented.

"There might be some red or black," she says, rummaging through the box. "Oh, here's some purple varnish!"

The makeup palette is a wee bit limited in the Underside.

"Varnish is what they put on wood," Mary objects - not out of contrariness, but in confusion.

She doesn't think she needs to be varnished!

"No, no, it's called nail varnish. It's for your fingernails."

She giggles.

"Or your toenails!"

"I met someone who could change the color of her nails," Mary offers, not to be left out.

"Only she did it by magic. She was a witch."

"'Dora can do that! She can change her hair color and her eyes and everything."

"Dora is not a wicked witch though, is she? This person said she was wicked," Mary announces, "but I think maybe she was only mean instead. It is different. I do not think she was important enough to be wicked."

She giggles. "No, 'Dora isn't wicked. Who was the person? She doesn't sound too magical at all, if all she can do is change her nail color."

She begins pulling out one of the boas and wrapping it around her shoulders.

"Her name was Candice."

Mary picks up a tiara and considers it, thoughtfully.

"I do not know. We did not speak long."

She shrugs. 'Dora's way cooler. Even Tom's way cooler, and he can't even change his eye color.

"Here, give me your hand, and I'll paint your nails. I did it once before, so I know how to do it."

Mary eyes Ingress a little warily for a moment, and then passes her hand over with only mild trepidation.

"If it looks stupid I shall just wash it off," she tells her, in a friendly fashion.

"I think you'll like it."

She very, very carefully applies the purple nail polish. She gets most of it on Mary's nails. A little slips off the nail, and sometimes she doesn't quite get the whole nail covered, but for the most part, Ingress does a passable job.

Mary waves her fingers, experimentally, watching the purple flicker.

"It should be nicer if it were green," she says, but she doesn't sound displeased. "Ought I to do you?"
