i don't like to read anymore. so i don't follow authors. except for sparks (hate how he writes, but it makes me CRY) and rowling (two words: harry potter) but murakami might be a new favorite.
this is the first book i have completed since, well, the days of great gatsby last year. i enjoyed it, i hope its not cause i become so unrefined in my tastes in books from not reading. sparks is good when you're looking for a sappy love story to pick up your spirits, more of an entertaining author not meant to be taken seriously. but i still love it.
i dont like the fact that murakami just kills off everyone when he doesn't know what else to do. death, sex, and alcohol are so prevalent that their not effective anymore. thats my one complaint about the book. it seems to be so exaggerated that its in the realm of fantasy.
it just seems too unbelieveable that everyone can just commit suicide and people don't think twice about it. think about, how many characters in the novel killed themselves: the friend, the insane girl, the insane girl's sister, and the tough guy's girlfriend. and then there was death in other forms, ie, cancer. every character of relevance died, it seemed like the author could have done so much more than kill them off. atleast something more creative than suicide, especially because there is no forshadowing for their wanting to kill themselves. it seems completely out of the blue, and maybe a little bit half ass.
sex and alcohol are prevalent. but in the book, it's just everywhere. when did toru drink anything other than sake or whiskey? all they did was go to bars and have sex afterward. its hard to believe that everyone during in time and place did it all the time. i thought maybe he could've toned it down. so it doesnt give japanese people a bad name atleast.
but then again, who isn't mentioned? go read marx, melville, or fitzgerald while your at it. there's tons of allusions to them also, it makes me want to read them, but im bad at understanding novels.
i have not read kerouac, but he doesn't seem relatable or comparable to murakami cause most of his novel came from ethic roots. i don't think kerouac has that.
Kerouac was just as debaucherous as harukami, except his editors made him cut out all the blowjob scenes in On the Road. Kerouac also made the acts of drinking and fucking more whimsical and dreamy. It went along with the no-worries, beatnik attitude of the 1950s, much like the 'drink now and fuck soon' attitude prevalent today. Kerouac had ethics, once upon a time, but he became a surly, disillusioned alcoholic and poured it out in his books, especially 'Big Sur.'
You should read 'Sputnik Sweetheart' by Murakami. Good stuff right there as well.
i dont think that the japanese people had the no worries attitude that the beatniks supposedly have, because all of them were dropping like flies from suicides. something had to get to them..
maybe i should read another murakami book to form a better opinion.
