i don't like to read anymore. so i don't follow authors. except for sparks (hate how he writes, but it makes me CRY) and rowling (two words: harry potter) but murakami might be a new favorite.

this is the first book i have completed since, well, the days of great gatsby last year. i enjoyed it, i hope its not cause i become so unrefined in my tastes in books from not reading. sparks is good when you're looking for a sappy love story to pick up your spirits, more of an entertaining author not meant to be taken seriously. but i still love it.

i dont like the fact that murakami just kills off everyone when he doesn't know what else to do. death, sex, and alcohol are so prevalent that their not effective anymore. thats my one complaint about the book. it seems to be so exaggerated that its in the realm of fantasy.

you just don't like that fact because you can't kill off everyone you don't know what else to do with. or maybe that's just me.

but sex and alcohol are prevalent in real life too and is not that effective anymore.

it just seems too unbelieveable that everyone can just commit suicide and people don't think twice about it. think about, how many characters in the novel killed themselves: the friend, the insane girl, the insane girl's sister, and the tough guy's girlfriend. and then there was death in other forms, ie, cancer. every character of relevance died, it seemed like the author could have done so much more than kill them off. atleast something more creative than suicide, especially because there is no forshadowing for their wanting to kill themselves. it seems completely out of the blue, and maybe a little bit half ass.

sex and alcohol are prevalent. but in the book, it's just everywhere. when did toru drink anything other than sake or whiskey? all they did was go to bars and have sex afterward. its hard to believe that everyone during in time and place did it all the time. i thought maybe he could've toned it down. so it doesnt give japanese people a bad name atleast.

but that's what makes the book interesting. would you want the book to be 3578348754378594 pages longer to show that toru was drinking water and milk?

and look below for the sex thing. i don't see japanese people as having bad names at all. lol.

anyways, there can't be a book that will cater to your every needs. and it seems to be that if you don't like the whole people dying... to stay away from his books from now on.

haha im pretty sure mentioning a little bit of milk wont take up that many pages. one or two less than that atleast.

oh japanese people definately have a bad name in my book. now all i picture when i hear japanese is some drunk as hell skinny kid doing it with an unpretty girl.

and i like death as much as the next person. but maybe a little less predictable than suicide. please?

duuuuuuuuuuude. who knows? maybe japanese people have a thing for milk? my sister bought an itty bitty cup of ICE COLD MILK (milk with 2 ice cubes) for like three dollars in the japanese airport.

milk. weird thing.

marjeth: do you know?
JustChoIt: depends on the age group
marjeth: how?
JustChoIt: I've heard from a friend, that the younger groups are having like a backlash to all the uptightness, and that in some highschools there are sex rings
marjeth: wow
JustChoIt: so yeah...
marjeth: how about adults?
JustChoIt: unlike how it should be, I guess the younger you are, teh looser you are...
JustChoIt: adults... I'm not sure

or maybe its because we are in america surrounded by all this sluttiness that we think we are more open. i'll have to visit japan to take a stance on this.
