The good news is that I worked on NaNo both Saturday and Sunday! The bad news is that I only got about half the words I needed -- but it's still early! There's time. And I still like my story, so I remain positive.
I was at a science conference in New Orleans in 2000 and it was funny to see people from all over the world basically hang up their science hats and stand around in clumps discussing the insanity of US elections. Oh the memories of crazy old white guys accidentally getting voted for that year because of those insane butterfly ballots. It's almost a running joke at this point about Florida voting (made even funnier in a sad sad sort of way when 6% of people who are exit polled (ie asked after they have voted) say they are undecided/don't know who they voted for).
Still, it really was incredibly tragic to see these little old Jewish ladies sobbing because they had accidentally voted for Pat Buchanan, an anti-Semite. If their votes had been counted toward who they intended to vote for, Gore would have won and the world would be a very different place. Let's hope people in FL remember to avoid voting for the crazy white guy in this election
