King of the Monkeys

Things that have been on my mind recently:

A Behanding in Spokane: Obviously, because, as Jesse mentioned, we went to go see it this weekend. We were drawn in by the twin allures of a writer we both admire (Martin McDonagh of In Bruges fame) and a stellar cast (Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, Anthony Mackie and Zoe Kazan), so we decided to try ( Read more... )

You watching Treme? I was so late to the Wire party that I'm making sure to stay on top of this one from the beginning.

Or are you guys not HBO people? The has, dangit, kept me from canceling HBO once Big Love finished, and then I'm pumped for Boardwalk Empire and Emergency Sex next year. Damn you and your quality programming, premium cable!

Yeah, we don't have HBO or Showtime. I keep saying we don't need it, because we could just Netflix the DVDs when they come out. Then, the DVDs come out, and in some cases I get press copies of them, and we still don't watch them. So I've never seen The Wire, or Big Love, or the Sopranos, or Weeds, etc.

Or True Blood, even though we have the first season sitting on the DVD shelf.

I have serious intent to watch The Wire and The Sopranos someday. The rest are pretty much up in the air. I think if the casts of Big Love and Weeds were in one mega-show with Seyfried and Mary-Louise Parker occasionally getting naked AND Bill Paxon running everything, I probably would've started watching by now.

That said, I do want to see Boardwalk Empire, though probably not enough to pay for another avenue of entertainment that I'll only wind up thinking I should use more often to justify the cost (see also: the rest of cable; Netflix).

Do you mean Bill Paxton ruining everything? Because that's what he does.

Give Big Love a try sometime. The performances by Chloe Sevigny and her whole polygamist family (like Mary Kay Place) rock. Weeds is missable after the first season or so.

I was really entertained to learn just a few minutes ago, via Entertainment Weekly, that American Idiot is opening on 4/20. Ha! Also, I kind of want to see Lend Me a Tenor now. Maybe I'll make that my annual Broadway outing. For someone who was such a giant theater nerd in high school, I don't see much as an adult.

I don't really see much, either. Jesse and I usually go to a play once a year on our anniversary. This year is probably going to be record-breaking, because his dad gave us tickets to The Fantasticks that he couldn't use, and we just saw Behanding, and I do kinda want to see American Idiot (and I still have hopes that the Spider-Man musical will open one day).

I'm confused about whether or not Lend Me a Tenor is a musical. Does Justin Bartha sing?

It's not a musical. But you'd really think it is, right?

I really want to see Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, but god knows when I'll have free time.

I'm pretty sure Lend Me a Tenor is a play. About music, but a play.

Please tell me what the technical difficulty was! Did the candle go out????? I was freaked out the whole time that they would make a wrong step and a breeze would waft over, thus completely ruining the entire dramatic tension of the whole play.

The candle went out. Anthony Mackie let out a yelp of triumph. Then a stagehand came on stage and re-lit it. He got a huge ovation.

Thank you! I was very worried about that candle the whole time. I knew they must've had some sort of plan in place, but it was still tense. That's one of the things I really liked about the play: There were a couple moments that gained dramatic intensity just because they were on stage, and "actually happening." Smart. I'm thinking of a certain suitcase reveal in particular, as well as the candle.
