Chandler Massey from Days of our Lives wins a Daytime Emmy while Van Hansis from As the World Turns never won one in the 3 years he was nominated. They both portray/portrayed gay characters but Van was SO much better. You know he was.

Seriously, Emmys, seriously?

*rolls eyes* Whatever, Emmys, whatever.

public post, van hansis, atwt, rant

Is it an open secret that the actor is still gay off camera? No? There's your answer. /cynic

Ha. That could be it, sadly. :(

I think the whole daytime Emmys thing stinks. There are countless similar examples. No wonder Van didn't bother to submit himself the last time. One of the guys on Y&R who is brilliant (and he can convey everything in a small movement like a shift in his eyes) doesn't bother to either because he knows he doesn't have a shot. However, Van had the added burden of being a gay character, which you know even a few years ago, no one would touch with a ten foot pole.

It does stink, I agree. And I can understand Luke's gay storyline not being very popular among voters the first year but what about the later years when he was nominated? His nominations in those years were for storylines that weren't about being gay or coming out and he still didn't win?!

Oh and I do recall Eden Riegel winning; her character was gay and I believe her coming out storyline was before Van's, no? So maybe voters weren't against gay characters after all? Maybe they just didn't like Van or his acting? Boo!

Oh, can I ask who the Y&R actor is? :)

I'd forgotten about Eden, but as I recall hearing (I wasn't an AMC fan) that they rarely kissed or did much (I could be wrong though). However, I think there was a bias about going ahead and giving it to another gay character so soon afterwards. Also, this was about the time JL was winning her 2 or 3 in a row, so there's also the possibility of the political feeling that,"hey, I voted for ATWT in that category, let me vote for another show in this one." I should also say that I never felt that ATWT wrote epis so that certain actors had something special to submit (unlike GH, for example), which I'm not against. I've always felt that (impossible as it would be) that the actors, writing, etc. be judged based on the entire year, not just an epi.

I don't think they were against Van in any way.

The stunning thing about this year's awards is that GH won so many, when OLTL was superior. I've never understood why the industry loves GH so much.

I like CM and think he's doing a great job (and I'm really grateful that DAYS has been rewarded for the gay storyline, since the producers insinuated recently that they were going to back away from it.) But I agree that it is TOTAL BS that Van never won. He broke my freakin' heart so many times on ATWT. Like his performance during those scenes that didn't happen? SO. AMAZING. I also think homophobia might have had something to do with it. :/

Nothing against CM's acting (he's been pretty good in the few eps I've watched) but Van is/was fantastic. He impressed me like no other actor on a soap and I've been watching soaps since middle school. I just hate that he wasn't publicly rewarded for his talent and ace acting on an otherwise not-so-good show, especially because it was his character who was so groundbreaking.

Yup, I agree his acting in the scenes in those last episodes were amazing.

Totally sucks. *sigh* But I like to think that Van, in part made the way for gay characters to get the recognition they deserved as he really rocked in Luke's coming out storyline.

The Daytime Emmys are a joke.

I like to think that too. I believe it!

Not the best awards show, that's for sure.

My view on most awards is not "How good are you?" but "Who do you know?" There are always some people who seem to be predetermined winners. How many times has the guy who voices Elmo on Sesame Street won? How may times did Susan Lucci NOT win? How many times has Jonathan Jackson from GH won? I'm certain the whole process is why Van didn't submit his final year. Awards shows are a joke.

This year there was a glaring omission in the nominees for younger actor. The kid who played Shane on OLTL whose name escapes me was fantastic. Regardless Chandler Massey did some outstanding work and I'm happy for him.

Did Van deserve a win? Absolutely, no question, especially that first year. He was totally robbed.

"Predetermined winners"--yup, that sounds about right. And IIRC, Jonathan Jackson was the predetermined winner that last year of ATWT so Van didn't stand a chance again. And oh yeah, he was robbed all those other times.

Good to have you back around here! :)

Agreed.
It's more of a popularity contest than anything else.

Van should have won for the first year, and at least gotten nominated for Reid's death storyline.

Popularity contest--yeah, that sounds about right. He definitely should've won the first year; he was amazing!
