Are you kidding me???

Chandler Massey from Days of our Lives wins a Daytime Emmy while Van Hansis from As the World Turns never won one in the 3 years he was nominated. They both portray/portrayed gay characters but Van was SO much better. You know he was.

Seriously, Emmys, seriously?

*rolls eyes* Whatever, Emmys, whatever.

I think the whole daytime Emmys thing stinks. There are countless similar examples. No wonder Van didn't bother to submit himself the last time. One of the guys on Y&R who is brilliant (and he can convey everything in a small movement like a shift in his eyes) doesn't bother to either because he knows he doesn't have a shot. However, Van had the added burden of being a gay character, which you know even a few years ago, no one would touch with a ten foot pole.

It does stink, I agree. And I can understand Luke's gay storyline not being very popular among voters the first year but what about the later years when he was nominated? His nominations in those years were for storylines that weren't about being gay or coming out and he still didn't win?!

Oh and I do recall Eden Riegel winning; her character was gay and I believe her coming out storyline was before Van's, no? So maybe voters weren't against gay characters after all? Maybe they just didn't like Van or his acting? Boo!

Oh, can I ask who the Y&R actor is? :)

I'd forgotten about Eden, but as I recall hearing (I wasn't an AMC fan) that they rarely kissed or did much (I could be wrong though). However, I think there was a bias about going ahead and giving it to another gay character so soon afterwards. Also, this was about the time JL was winning her 2 or 3 in a row, so there's also the possibility of the political feeling that,"hey, I voted for ATWT in that category, let me vote for another show in this one." I should also say that I never felt that ATWT wrote epis so that certain actors had something special to submit (unlike GH, for example), which I'm not against. I've always felt that (impossible as it would be) that the actors, writing, etc. be judged based on the entire year, not just an epi.

I don't think they were against Van in any way.

The stunning thing about this year's awards is that GH won so many, when OLTL was superior. I've never understood why the industry loves GH so much.

You bring up some good points.

And I was a hardcore GH fan in early 90s when the storylines were really well written and/or perfectly soapy (Monica's breast cancer, AJ's drinking, Sonny/Brenda/Lily triangle, Jason's accident and amnesia) so I was always glad when they won during that time. I've only watched a few eps in the past year but no, the show to me is nowhere as good as it once was. I think they win because the crew and producers are much nicer and more humble people than other show runners. That's what I think anyway.

I used to watch GH during that time as well, it was fantastic. They had some great, soapy storylines. I looked forward to the Nurse's Ball every year. :/ very upset they stopped doing that.

The Nurse's Ball!!! I also looked forward to that every summer. I loved Lucy as the host and all her costume changes and antics.

Michael Muhney?

As for Van, he should have won every time he was nominated, if not for him, I would not have been able to tolerate the Luke/N storyline for so long. But I think he got over that.

Yup! I completely agree! That's how I tolerated the Nuke storyline too. Even when ESS came on, I was still always more impressed with Van's acting.

Michael Muhney. A couple of years ago he blew me away with some really great acting in incredibly ridiculous SLs. He was so superior to everyone else on the show at the time...and the other actors had to bring their A game. 1-1/2 years ago when his character met Maura W.'s for the first time, he was electrifying in that very brief scene. Right now he's in a semi-boring SL (he's a bad boy who is being redeemed; I can't wait for him to go back to the dark side).

Ah yes I'll agree about MM. I started watching Y&R when he first replaced the other actor. He is a great actor who seems to outshine anyone he's in a scene with. I hated when they paired his character with Sharon though. She was too boring for him. I haven't watched any soap regulatrly since ATWT went off the air though so I haven't seen any of his more recent storylines.

I hate to say you're not missing much right now. They just SORAS'd a whole crop of kids (some are now in their early 20s who weren't even teenagers six months ago!). I hate crap like that. And Sharon is now sleeping with Victor (after having gone through all of his sons. Yuk!)

I'm sorry but I don't get how people are even supposed to like Sharon; she's been with every man in Genoa City, hasn't she? Yuck. And there's another thing I hate, of course: she can sleep with many, many, many men and still be a heroine or whatever, but a man (like Luke) who loved only 2 men in his life couldn't sleep with more than 1 man because, apparently, that would've/could've turned people off. A gay man with more than 1 lover? That's madness! Ha.

I agree 100% and the bets are already starting that she'll sleep next with a returning character. They've really ruined the character (I've liked the actress ever since she was on ATWT, but Sharon has always made me groan), and I also agree with your assessment about how these shows make it ok for a character like that to sleep with everyone in town (and more), but poor Luke can't date around or have a true love. A terrible double standard.
