Poetry Friday: King of Griefs by Sara Lewis Holmes

Jul 13, 2007 06:29

He's the King
in riot gear,
a mob surrounds the throne --
You're mine -- and you --
and you -- you're mine -- he tells his fears,
but still they moan,
knowing he is armed
with only poetry
and tears --
-- King of Griefs from the novel Letters From Rapunzel by Sara Lewis Holmes

This poem has been posted with permission from the author. Thank you, Sara!

Letters from Rapunzel is an epistolary novel for ages 10 and up. The story told in letters written by a young girl when her father, suffering from what she calls the "Evil Spell" of clinical depression, is hospitalized. I've added the book to the Tough Issues for Teens booklist.
