Gotta love White Collar

There's nothing that cheers me up quite like this show. Even when dealing with scary/difficult subjects it's still incredibly warming. Maybe I'm just wired wonky and have a soft spot for people like Neal.

I guess this is kind of an analysis of Neal: Who he is and where he comes from and where that fics in my fandom addled brain lol.

I have to admit I have no clue what you want to say with this post except that you thought a lot about Neal and his past...

I agree with you that sometimes I have the feeling that Neal Caffrey is just another alias that he got once he got 'out' of the system. But it's the closest to his true one. And I think it's easier to always or nearly always use one name as a first name so that you can't mix up the name combinations.

I actually thought that maybe Neal's dad wasn't just a cop but also a Fed or with the CIA...but not so sure about that. There is so little real info about Neal that it's hard to be sure about anything.

Exactly, we have so little tangible 'truth' due to the very nature of who he is and what he does. Also the fact that it seems he can tell a lie without considering it to be one ( ... )

I don't know maybe he was George before he became Neal...

I think sometimes you can over analyse a character but I am sure you are not doing it, you are just someone who needs all this research to write :) I'm more to write the characters how I see them without over analysing why they would do this or that, why they said this or that...

I guess he learned the basics during his time in the system and it is possible that he was first in foster and then got adopted later although I think he was in foster and had to change quite often so that he doesn't really trust anyone, except Mozzie and now to some point Peter.

Maybe, or George is someone who was important to him, either is possible.

Oh, it's very easy to over-analyse someone, especially someone like Neal: his motivations as well as his 'story' are so intriguing. I don't worry myself with it though, I don't pull apart everything he says and does (can't be bothered with that lol). The accumulated effect is what interests me (that he lives for Peter's praise and hates his disappointment).

I'm not sure, it's possible to have that complete distrust for fellow man without having been in the system. Obviously he was burned badly at some point though.

If you haven't already, friend elrhiarhodan. Not only is she a fantastic writer, but also offers a lot of meta and blows me away with her insight, just like you.

I *think* that with the flashback episode everything got a bit awkward. No way is it possible to pull off a con like that in such a short period of time, including falling in love and then travel so much. But I'm sure we'll get a better explanation of that all one day. Right now, that whole "Adler" thing looks too well contained for me, there's no room at all to play with and I got a bit lost.

Meh. I'm still lost (sorry for my rambling!)

I agree with Neal meeting Mozzie he learned the right way to pull off long cons. If you watch Hustle, maybe Neal was more like Danny Blue at first, pulling off succesful short cons, and turned out to be Mickey Bricks once Mozzie (Albert haha) entered his life.

A couple of things that struck me about the flashback episode: they had the bond forgery was so early on, the one that got him on Peter's radar originally (how did he figure out the guy who gave him the lollipop was the guy responsible for forging the bonds?), so even though Peter followed Neal for all that time, he wasn't able to collect any other evidence against him as no other charges stuck; Diana was in it, sure she was a probie at the time but she was still a probie when Neal got out 4 years later? So, I think they got that got their timing off with some things a little; and, the way Kate reacted to Neal 'trying to con her', or rather the fact that she figured out that he was without giving him the benefit of the doubt or allowing him to defend himself, she didn't consider that it was about a job rather than a girl - just seemed off ( ... )

I wonder if all the fake ids are linked somehow to his needing to be 21? That would tie into a 78ish dob. If he was actually younger he would have been unable to use clubs etc as meeting places. Just a thought.

Or at least 20 in order to be taken seriously.
