Gotta love White Collar

There's nothing that cheers me up quite like this show. Even when dealing with scary/difficult subjects it's still incredibly warming. Maybe I'm just wired wonky and have a soft spot for people like Neal.

I guess this is kind of an analysis of Neal: Who he is and where he comes from and where that fics in my fandom addled brain lol.

Exactly, we have so little tangible 'truth' due to the very nature of who he is and what he does. Also the fact that it seems he can tell a lie without considering it to be one.

lol I have thought a lot about Neal and his past because it's a big hole with a question mark over it. What made him who he is is a very interesting thing to explore. Also, I have read so many fics that have a theory about it. The usual being that he was in the system (though as far as I recall that's never been confirmed in canon the Burma ep hinted strongly at the possibility). He obviously learned the art of the con from somewhere and it was before he met Moz (he was already forging the bonds then).

I agree with you about keeping as close to the original name so that you don't slip up, which makes me wonder as he has at least 3 aliases that are called George. lol.

The comment that Moz made about Peter being able to help immediately threw up that his dad was possibly a fed, but then my overactive brain has supplied that maybe the bad cop comment was accurate and that Peter could use his access to databases to find out more about him (with the possibility that he might not even be dead).

The only thing we do now know about for sure is how long he'd known Kate and how he met her. We also know that he was a forger and a grifter before he met Moz but that before he met Moz he didn't fully understand the importance of knowing your mark (which suggests he was inexperienced in that kind of con).

*grins* Obsessed? Me? Nah. lol. Oh and I just remembered something I forgot from my post *goes to edit* lol. That said, it's this analytical part of my brain that I think allows me to write better because of a greater understanding of my character *shrugs*.

I don't know maybe he was George before he became Neal...

I think sometimes you can over analyse a character but I am sure you are not doing it, you are just someone who needs all this research to write :) I'm more to write the characters how I see them without over analysing why they would do this or that, why they said this or that...

I guess he learned the basics during his time in the system and it is possible that he was first in foster and then got adopted later although I think he was in foster and had to change quite often so that he doesn't really trust anyone, except Mozzie and now to some point Peter.

Maybe, or George is someone who was important to him, either is possible.

Oh, it's very easy to over-analyse someone, especially someone like Neal: his motivations as well as his 'story' are so intriguing. I don't worry myself with it though, I don't pull apart everything he says and does (can't be bothered with that lol). The accumulated effect is what interests me (that he lives for Peter's praise and hates his disappointment).

I'm not sure, it's possible to have that complete distrust for fellow man without having been in the system. Obviously he was burned badly at some point though.

Sometimes I see similarities between Gibbs/Tony and Peter/Neal at least when it comes to how much Tony/Neal need the praise of the other one :)

Oh yes, his life is very intersting especially since we know so little. I actually like that there is still room to speculate to make it work for stories without being too AU ^^

But being in the system and changing foster homes often would be a good explanation and of course he got burned once at least...
