If you have doubts about the new Star Trek, take it from someone who ran around the garden pretending to ‘have the bridge’ when she was 10. THIS is awesome ( Read more... )

I'm going to see it tomorrow night! Your recap makes me hopeful, but seeing as they left my favorite character out, I'm holding back on the enthusiasm yet.

Yeah. My heart always went out to her, with her unrequited love for Spock. I understand that the timeline won't allow for her to be on the Enterprise at the time the new movie is set, but I think I'll still miss her dreadfully. :(

I had some issues with the Spock/Uhura, and consequently with Spock a little (he was a tad too expressive for me at times, he somehow lacks that laconic bemusement that Nimoy brings across so brilliantly), but other than that, I did generally really like it a lot!

See, I saw them hug in the trailer and thought "...", and then when it became clear in the film that they were an item I wasn't sure about it, but in a way it really worked well for me. (I was actually a bit surprised by that)

It just messed with my version of Spock too much, as see above. I think one of the things that I love so very much about him is that he stands aside from the rest of humanity, and it's only after a while and through very subtle hints that you realise that he does actually have emotions and is just suppressing them. And there are lots and lots of ways in which you can explain the relationship with chaos theory-type changes induced by the Romulans leading to it, but I just don't... like it. It didn't fit, and in my opinion, they used it to make Spock less alien to make him more sympathetic to the mainstream audience and it just didn't sit right with me. Meh. Also didn't like that it turned Uhura's role largely into that of a love-interest and running after Spock as a consequence.

But all the redesigns and stuff? Yay! And Kirk worked surprisingly well for me as well. :D

Hee, I have such a different view of this.

I thought they made it very clear that Uhura was feisty, intelligent and capable and that despite clearly loving Spock was able to stand her grown and not budge and being her own woman. As for Spock, I already knew he was able to feel very deeply and to the other characters, he is still mostly unemotional - only loosing it when, you know, Kirk pushes and pushes, after his race has been almost entirely wiped out and his mother died in front of his eyes. So to the other characters, he is still rational and Vulcan.

But then, I've been reading canon novels since I was little and there is quite a lot of stuff out there from the 70ies that has him being more emotional than you'd expect so I am more used to it than you, and am also quite fond of the concept.
