Alert! Very tricky very EVIL new eBay SPOOF scam that almost had me fooled! Beware!

Aug 22, 2006 16:32

My e-mail blockage has finally been cleared again, yay 8D! I got 128 new messages, MEEP! Among those messages, I found a new VERY suspicious e-mail that supposedly came from bidconfirm@ebay.com, which is eBay's account for sending bid confirmations. At the top, it said I had placed a bid on eBay auction #220016866696, a lot of Imation data ( Read more... )

I've noticed those Spoofs get more and more sophisticated all the time, and I always report them as well. I get them more and more, it seems, but I always keep track of EVERYTHING I do through both sites, although honestly, I guess all it would take is having a would-be scammer set up a legit auction, have people bid, then somehow trick them into reading/reply to "phish" E-mails. I'm sure it's been tried. It's scary stuff! @_@

Hi THE Jill,

Yeah, usually, the e-mails say they're from some site with a slightly different name than eBay, but this time, the sender looked like it was from eBay itself o-O! This is the same method someone is using to send me SPAM once or twice a day via hand which my syster administrator can't block because it really does look legitimate --;!

I've gotten some of those and some 'Non-paying bidder' messages from "eBay" as well. I usually visit eBay often enough that I could tell if such a thing had happened and even before reaching the fake links, the full headers of the email tell the real story. Really, I always do my eBay business by going to eBay directly and not following any links in email.

Yeah, there's one regarding a Dell laptop that I've gotten a few times. Luckily these never hold up under close scrutiny.

Hi Chandra,

This particular auction just ended recently. Do the phishers set up the auctions too, or do they just choose auctions at random for their scheme?

Not so new...I got a couple of those fakemails about two years ago and I hadn't visited ebay in years. Since I wasn't a member, I had to go through a lonnnng click-this-click-this-click-this to report it. Good grief... Since re-singing up, I've gotten hit about once. (shrug) I agree about the email headers. If you can get those, you can do some investigating on your own by plunking IP addresses one at a time into the ARIN search box and going on from there. But I ramble. :)

Hi bordfroyal,

Wow, I must have lucked out then. This is the first of this type of phishing scheme I've received so far. I usually get the dead-giveaway-it's-a-scam e-mails from Pay FIEND/Pall phishers who don't know that I terminated my Pay FIEND/Pall account 7-8 years ago under a different e-mail address >8D!

Hi Meredith,

A friend of mine, bordfroyal, replied to my comment asking what e-mail program you use ^^;. I don't think you'll get an alert about his comment since it was a reply to mine ;b!
