Was it raining? I've spun wheels in the rain and the speedo said I was doing 120 while in reality I wasn't moving at all! :D

are the 50 and 45 speeds the speed that a police radar would read from outside of the vehicles or just what the speedometers are showing?

If it's just the internal speed reading, then it could be something like a slipping drivetrain..

I've thought of some strange ideas on this one, some that involve earth curvature, some that involve crosswinds.. but none of my far-out ideas work if the external speeds are being measured at 45 and 50, but a plethera of possible responses open up if that's only the internal odometer reading.

What I'm assuming is that the road is unrealistically flat and straight (though you didn't specify flat?), and that the speeds are the actual traveling speeds of the vehicles in relation to the road..

appropriate sizes for their respective cars, or just ... in general?
bah nevermind, if it's the right size for the car the speedometer will be correct anyway... ;p so even if it's a monster truck racing alongside a voltswagen beetle... wouldn't make a difference... darn

...I got nothin..
