I see a wonderful symmetry between this and the death of the sixteenth-century philosopher Sir Francis Bacon. Bacon was riding along in his carriage in the middle of the winter when he wondered whether snow could be used to preserve meat. So he leapt out into a snowbank and stuffed a chicken carcass (which he apparently had with him) full of snow to see how long it would last. Unfortunately he caught a cold while doing so, and died miserably shortly thereafter.

Even though this a sad and pointless end to great mind, I have to say . . . visualizing that story, imagining him leaping from the carriage to stuff a plucked chicken with snow . . . that makes me giggle. Poor sod, but, damn, lol.
