Cheers. It might be worthy of a longer piece. I've always been fascinated by the notion that angels and demons are either the same beings and it's only our perception that makes them different from each other or that angels used to be demons (or vice versa).
Or that Earth is hell. Or that the apocalypse happened twenty years ago. Or heaven and hell co-exists with us. Etc. I just love all of the mythology and possibilites and metaphors that go with it.
Absolutely, man :) I've been talking to some Jehova's Witnesses recently, which has led to me reading the Bible in earnest for the first time, plus some histories and concordences. They're not converting me to the religion, but I'd forgotten what a rich and fascinating pantheon of myth and imagery there is there.
I don't think it was entirely implied, but your story made me think of social workers that deal with disadvantaged drug users, going into the role bright and full of love for humanity, slowly, slowly becoming jaded and resentful, until they hate and abuse the people they were supposed to care for. (ooh, I'm a dark bugger this evening... :))
But yes, love all of those entangled threads and really like the piece :)
Oh yeah, for sure. I think I gave "reading the Bible in earnest" quite a few years back but I couldn't penetrate the language. Maybe I should give it another shot now that I'm older. It's rich fodder.
Yeah, I think there's a lot of the human condition in this one. A little bit of finding out about the Eater Bunny, getting consumed with 'what about me?', the bouts of justification we sometimes find ourselves in while dabbling in morally dubious behaviour, a lot of stuff. That social worker angle fits right in.
Thanks for the praise and the words. I appreciate it.
Ha ha, no not at all. I wasn't a huge fan of Dogma but a lot of what the angels had to say was gold. And I think I might be the only real fan of Constantine out there. Maybe because I was expecting it to suck so bad. And comparing me to Gaiman is okay with me any day.
Hey check this out. I downloaded a trailer for Constantine aaaages ago and it came through all garbled and split in half but for some reason, it totally works. Check it out.
And I think I might be the only real fan of Constantine out there.
Then that makes two, maybe because I never read Hellblazer. I thought it was neat overall, with a great Hell sequence and an awesome performance by Peter Stormare.
Oh yeah, Peter Stormare was great. I read the comic series and they took a blonde Englishman from London and put him in LA. And it was Keanu. So I was like "Oh boy. Let's piss on the Mona Lisa while we're at it." But I loved it. And Tilda Swinton was fucking awesome. I thought the only weak point was the devil's son being totally CG. I understood why they made that call but I would have preferred an actor. Glad there's two of us. : )
Longer? Shit yeahkindelingboyNovember 24 2007, 10:07:13 UTC
Do I even need to say anything?
This was great. More mythos please. This reminded me of All Men are Mortal by Simon de Beauvoir, where the protagonist has eternal life and finds that it robs him of all meaning.
If we ever got together and traded ideas about this kind of story, we would have an interesting story on our hands.
Also, that Constantine trailer does indeed work well.

Awesome. Thanks. I've alway enjoyed the stories with "Well, the devil does kind of have a point." morals. Not that he's *right* but he's more complex than a hissing, long-nailed, tiger-eyed, demon beast thing. I don't know the book you're referring to so I'll have to dial that up. I sure do like the mythos action.
I remember your 3day novel from last year. You're probably right.
After watching that Constantine trailer, I wanted it to become a new form of editing. It fit in with my almost nonexistent attention span nicely.

I think its about being able to play around with a world that is almost formless. Not much is detailed about the devil, his fall, or the angels. The texts and apocrypha detail their lives insofar as their actions with us, but thats it. The Bible and the story it carries is also fixed in a certain point in time, with the implication that the characters continue on to this day.
Ripe for storytelling, lots of room for creative interpretations.

It's kind of like Bible fan-fiction.
