So, when I got home tonight, I found a notice on my door that my rent is late, and if I don't pay before tomorrow, the management will sic the sheriff on me. Get a copy of the bank statement in case the sheriff shows up. Show him the statement with the cashed check and the letter, and ask him if he really wants to be involved in a false arrest. (Except in a more tactful way.)

Will do that, though I managed to get in touch with the landlady and she promised to not do anything stupid before she checks up on what's going on. And it turns out she finally got to the rental office last night a half hour after I gave up waiting. Nrg.

I had that happen once and it was because they wrote the apartment number down wrong and put the check to another apartment who actually was late on rent. But I agree with the above statement. (friend of bewilde btw)

Scary! This is the sort of thing that makes me pay at the front office in person and getting a receipt (of course, I usually end up paying in cash, which has the downside of cutting the paper trail; but it makes it more likely they'll remember me).

But I did pay in person. Very specifically to avoid this sort of situation.

They have to bring an unlawful detainer action prior to sending the sheriff to remove you. They'll have to serve you and you have the right to a court hearing. Get a copy of the check (front and back) if it is not cleared up by the next call you make.

Hang in there!

P.S. Surely it's time to move?
